Will my Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD work with my Canon RP and EF-EOS R adapter?

Hi

I just bought a new Canon RP with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM kit for a real bargain price of CHF 849 (ca. $935). After using it for a few weeks now I must say that I'm really really happy with this kit and I love everything about it especially the colours and sharpness etc. I've rediscovered so many joys of photography and am being amply impressed by the image quality and functionality. I can't impress how much I love this camera.

Anyway I have this Tamron AF 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC LD lens from 2008 which I used to use with my Canon T2 and despite the inferior glass I'd like to be able to use it from time to time on the RP for long reach. I intend to buy an RF telephoto zoom but can't really splash out now so instead of getting something cheap I'd like to wait to get someting good. I know that Tamron says that this model is not supported with EOS R but what does this actually mean? Will I be able to use it but get no EXIF data for example or do I have to remove the circular vignette myself or what? Will the image look OK if I set the crop aspect ratio to 1.6. I'm afraid I can't find out this info anywhere so was hoping someone here might be able to help.

Thanks

Liam

I would think it would work in crop mode, which would give you about a 10MP image. The only way to be sure is to try it. Do you have the adapter for your RP? If so, just give it a try.

As the length of a thread approaches 150, the probability that someone will make the obvious "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" remark approaches 1.

It is not on the list of compatible lenses:

https://www.tamron.ca/faq/canon_eos_r/

https://www.tamron.eu/lt/aptarnavimas/compatibility-nikon-z-and-canon-eos-r/

It may still work, with quirks, though.

And as others have said, it's a crop camera lens, so it will need your camera in crop mode, which is 10MP only.

It would have the same "issue/s" as any APS-C designed lens would encounter with a FF sensor, but should work----How well ????

Thanks. I don't have the adapter so would only get it if it was worth it. Perhaps a good alternative is to get a 2nd hand Canon EF telephoto lens for a while.

You will need an EF to R adapter for any lens I use a number of third party adapters such as the Meike which was only $57.

I have a 18-400 Tamron  APS-C lens which is very small an light.   Not perfect but I think it works great on my EOS R.

Canon EF 70-200mm F4L IS (first version) is an outstanding top shelf pro zoom that is often under $500 used now. Only real negative is noisy IS if you do video.

If you want something even cheaper, the Tamron 70-300 VC (Model A005) is compatible according to Tamron and is closer to $250.
