Discontinued Nikon lenses

Several sites (e.g. https://petapixel.com/2021/05/12/nikon-has-discontinued-several-f-mount-lenses-report/ )are reporting that Nikon has discontinued 7 lenses. Disappointing.

There's a lot more in life to be disappointed about than that.

Only one on the list I'd ever consider would be the 200 f2 VRII and I've been down that road, and it was a dead end.  I bought a used, but brand new one, never out of the box, for under $4000 Cdn, when it was over $8000 in the store.  Could never find a use for it and after using it 3 or 4 times, re-sold it for a profit.  The GAS for that lens is gone.

And all of those lenses will be available on the used market for years and years.  Best way to buy, IMO, anyway.

A Canon G5 and a bit of Nikon gear.

I enjoy my Nikon gear. But as has been pointed out to me "it’s a declining, decaying system based upon ancient technology" Funny that, never noticed.

And, one could look at it as a positive sign. They badly need to reduce the cost base, and one of the obvious ways of doing so is by streamlining the product lines. Apart from the 200mm which is niche, there are alternatives anyway.

Sometimes you have to take hard decisions, and in this environment, particularly so.

I got a PM to point out that these were based on rumors.  So, maybe it won't happen.

I was disappointed that the 16-80mm was on the list.  Other than price, it is an excellent lens, better than the other Nikon general zooms for APS-C cameras.

Same  impression here.  I've got the lens, so would not be buying it, but I find it very useful on my DX cameras.

The original site which posted this information based their comments on the Nikon Japan website. The US (and Canadian ) sites are not showing a similar status. I guess we will have to see what happens over the next few days. If anyone is fluent in Japanese they might want to check out the Japan website for more information.

The way I read these tea leaves, Nikon is done with DX on the DSLR side, and done with all non-pro level FX on the DSLR side, which probably leaves Nikon with just D850 and D6 going forward, and possibly their successors.

Not sure what to make of the 200 f/2. I'm guessing it was too low volume seller and not worth it to keep it going.

16-35/4 also doesn't quite fit the discernible pattern though... Probably just not all that popular, although a decent and useful lens overall IMO.

I hope Nikon bring out an update version of the 16-35mm. The lens released more than 10 years ago - even the cheaply built 18-35 is better optically.

Not in my experience. I have heard of some very poor examples of the 16-35, in fact there was a thread last week where the pictures posted were very soft even in the centre. But assuming you get a normal copy of the 16-35, it is pretty much identical in optical performance between 18 and 35mm as the 18-35. Both lenses seem to dislike the 35mm focal length.

The only difference between my two is that the 16-35 has a 16mm option that the 18-35 obviously doesn’t. Admittedly, at 16mm the corners are softer than at 18mm and I think that’s where the idea that the 18-35 is better comes from because you can argue that at their widest setting the 18-35 is better than the 16-35, but that’s because the 16-35 is doing something the 18-35 can’t.

If you don’t want the 16mm option, the 18-35 is cheaper (although not much if buying used) lighter and smaller.

The other important difference not to be overlooked is very effective VR in the 16-35. If you happen to shoot handheld in cathedrals, castles, etc., you would appreciate this benefit tremendously. Also helps with using small aperture for DOF maximization in any poorly lit environment, as well as avoiding shooting at f/4 where the lens may not be at its best in the corners. IMHO, the VR alone makes this lens a winner over 18-35 or even 14-24 for that matter.

Admittedly, at 16mm the corners are softer than at 18mm and I think that’s where the idea that the 18-35 is better comes from because you can argue that at their widest setting the 18-35 is better than the 16-35, but that’s because the 16-35 is doing something the 18-35 can’t.

Sample variation, differences of opinion, go figure...

https://photographylife.com/reviews/nikon-16-35mm-f4g-vr/4

I actually wouldn't rate it as high as 4.5 on mechanical quality, it doesn't have the rock solid build feel of the top of the line professional lenses. But other than that, it is pretty good.

I doubt there will be a replacement, Nikon is trying to wrap up the F-mount stuff AFAICT, so next version is likely to be in the Z mount, whether we like it or not.

The lens earns its 4.5 star due to full metal construction including magnesium alloy outer casing rather than plastic similar to the majority of the modern lens constructions and there are seals for dust and moisture protection.

I wouldn’t disagree with that summary. It’s not outstanding but neither is the 18-35. Solid is a fair assessment.

This is interesting because mine has a plastic outer casing.

  • AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR,

This is a pretty popular lens. I wouldn't doubt a new improved version would follow.

  • AF-S Nikkor 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR,

Nikon probably expects to make an S version

  • AF-S Nikkor 200mm f/2G ED VR II,

With all of the other super lenses having been updated, I wouldn't be surprised to see an FL version soon.

  • AF-S DX Nikkor 16-80mm f/2.8-4E ED VR,
  • AF-S DX Nikkor 18-300mm f/3.5-6.3G ED VR, and

Probably and S version for these too.

  • AF-S DX Micro Nikkor 85mm f/3.5G ED VR

This might warrant a new version.
