Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4

Re: Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4 - slow exposure change in AF-C?

That's weird.

With my X-T4 in AF-C mode, whether "SHUTTER AF" is set to ON or OFF, the camera changes shutter speed instantly as long as "SHUTTER AE" set to OFF.

I used fixed ISO and aperture to see the shutter speed change as the scene gets darker or brighter.

Your X-t3 behaviour doesn't seem right. Digital camera's react instant on exposure measurement, the only thing that may be slow is a hunting autofocus.

Thanks for checking. Just to confirm, you are having shutter-button half-pressed, right? Because without it, exposure change is instant for me, too, as expected - but once the shutter button is half-pressed and held like that, exposure change becomes slow (smooth).

I used fixed ISO and aperture to see the shutter speed change as the scene gets darker or brighter.

I tried using the fixed ISO, but I still have the same behavior, unfortunately (using fully manual lens, my aperture is already fixed, too).

While I agree (only mine?) X-T3 doesn`t appear to work correctly here, I disagree about the rest - it was one of the firmware updates that brought "smooth" exposure change exactly, but for video (smoothing previously existing "exposure ramping"). Not sure if it didn`t introduce the bug I`m experiencing to AF-C stills at the same time.

Today I also updated my X-T4 from 1.22 to 1.23 and indeed, the bug is fixed.

Could you please test out what I`ve reported here[1]? It`s for X-T3, but as the same bug was present there, I guess the "fix" is the same, too.

In short - in AF-C mode, with "SHUTTER AF" set to ON (for AF-C) and "SHUTTER AE" set to OFF (for AF-C), on holding shutter half-pressed and pointing camera from light to dark scene (or vice versa), exposure change is delayed and rather slow (smooth), requiring you to wait a few seconds until the exposure gets to what it should be before you can take the shot.

On the contrary, in AF-S mode, with "SHUTTER AF" set to ON (for AF-S) and "SHUTTER AE" set to OFF (for AF-S/MF), on holding shutter half-pressed and pointing camera from light to dark scene (or vice versa), exposure change is rapid - as expected, and as it should be for AF-C mode, too, I would say, allowing one to take the shot immediately, without having to wait for exposure to slowly adapt.

So even the situation is now better for AF-C, where instead of not changing at all, even with "SHUTTER AE" set to OFF (for AF-C), the exposure now does change again, but it does so very (and unnecessarily?) slowly, for some weird reason...?

Yes Boogisha, my X-T3 (FW 4.12) behaves exactly as yours. There is a long delay in AF-C while the exposure slowly adjusts if I use your settings. There is no such delay with Shutter AF set to OFF.

Thanks for confirming! So there`s some rather weird "SHUTTER AF" and "SHUTTER AE" entanglement still, for AF-C mode, former unexpectedly affecting the latter.

I`m now curious if X-T4 is better here, or just the same, possibly making a difference whether we`ll see this one fixed (and on X-T3), too... or not.

Same problem with my xt4

Eh, thanks for confirming, and sorry to hear that - but at least there might be some hope now that Fuji will look into it once more, addressing this leftover issue as well (and for X-T3).

Re: Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4 - slow exposure change in AF-C?

Nilsa: With firmware 1.23?

Because I (temporary) have two X-T4 bodies, both updated from 1.22 to 1.23 and the instant change of exposure that was destroyed with version 1.22 was back (in AF-C mode, with Shutter AF for AF-C set ON and Shutter AE for AF-C set Off).

Boogisha: yes, I have the shutter half-pressed.

Correction: not tested accurately enough, see my post below (October 28th).

Boogisha was right, exposure adjustment moving from a dark to bright scene with the shutter half-pressed is delayed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I must have not tested accurately enough at first. I did much more tests in the last two days, and especially when I started zooming in making changes in brightness more emphatic, I also notice the delay.

I found out that when using Pre-AF ON together with Shutter AF in AF-C mode Off, the desired behaviour can be "simulated".

So:
Setup, Button/Dial settings: Shutter AF, AF-C to Off.
Setup, Button/Dial settings: Shutter AE, AF-C to Off.
AF/MF Settings, Pre-AF to On.

This is not a combination of settings you want to keep (Pre-AF On), but at least it shows that the camera is capable setting the right exposure instantly instead of with a delay, and still have Auto Focus.

So we have to start bug reporting again...
Wish I could go back to an older firmware, like I was able to with my Garmin GPS device.

Regards.

Re: Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4

Is there a bug reporting page, or an existing bug we can add a +1 to?
This is so annoying that I might sell both my x-t4 and x-t3 and chill with my x-h1 that isn't broken.

What I did last time I found what I believed was a software bug.

  1. Try to have all the facts well spelled out in a forum thread,
  2. Write a good short summary and include a reference to the most detailed forum posts. Add a few pictures to make your point very clear. Explain how to reproduce the faulty behavior.
  3. Send an email to the nearest Fuji-repair location with your bug report attached and tell them you have a problem that looks like a software bug. Ask them to forward everything to the software developer.

The answer I got was that the report was sent as I asked. There was no further answer from them. However the bug was fixed in a firmware release four months later. There was no acknowledgement of the bug and no reference to it; just a mention of "various optimizations" or something like that.

So I can't tell if the fix came up as a result of my report or if it was just a coincidence.

Good luck.

Thank you. I'll try that out.
I do wish there was an official bug reporter link for X-Cameras

Anybody try the new firmware yet to see if this is now fixed?
