Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4
2

After I updated my X-T4 to the latest firmware (1.20). Exposure is locked in afc when focusing(half-press the shutter). Even though the shutter AE setting is off in menu. I found another X-T4 model with the same problem. But my friend's X-S10 with exactly the same settings don't have this situation. I heard that X-T3 with the latest firmware have the same problem. Don't know whether it's a bug or not?

No problem here with XT3 latest firmware

I suggest you reinitialize at default after having saved your settings with Fujim X acquire program available at Fuji Global

Hmm, I can confirm the same issue with my X-T3 on Ver.4.10 firmware, indeed - no matter if "SET UP > BUTTON/DIAL SETTING > SHUTTER AE[1]" is set to ON or OFF for AF-C, once the shutter buttons is half-pressed the exposure is locked anyway.

The difference is "EL" (exposure lock) icon does appear when ON is selected, but not for OFF - yet exposure is locked still.

On the other hand AF-S works as expected - ON locks exposure on shutter button half-press (and "EL" icon is shown), and OFF does not lock exposure on shutter button half-press (neither is "EL" icon shown).

So now we can confirm that X-T3 & X-T4 with the latest firmware both have this problem. I have send the email to Fuji Japan. Hope they will soon solve this problem.

Re: Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4 - same with X-T3, Ver.4.10

Since I never notice any wrong exposure in AFC I did not notice that as you wrote the EVF is wrong either if AF is done with shutter release button half pressed or BB (my config)

It is definitly a bug but I just retested now that final exposure is just perfect.......strange indeed !

Thx for info

I`m not sure what do you mean by "this is what is SHOWN but exposure does work perfectly", as it doesn`t seem to be the case on my end - with "SHUTTER AE" set to OFF for AF-C, once the shutter button is half-pressed, exposure seems locked anyway (even no "EL" icon is shown).

So, if I point the camera at a bright scene and half-press the shutter button, then reframe to a dark scene (still holding the shutter button half-pressed, thus exposure wrongly and unexpectedly locked, not respecting the "SHUTTER AE" setting), exposure does not change in EVF - and once I press the shutter button completely to take the picture I end up with a completely dark frame, which indicates exposure is still locked upon taking the picture, too, which is again wrong (and same as shown on screen while half-pressing).

If I release shutter button half-press while framing the dark scene, exposure compensates accordingly.

Again, in AF-S mode it works as expected - with "SHUTTER AE" set to OFF and once the shutter button is half-pressed, reframing from light to dark scene allows exposure to change as expected (not being locked, as per that "SHUTTER AE" setting), and taking the picture uses changed exposure (according the scene framed at the moment of taking the shot, not half-pressing the shutter button).

Re: Exposure is locked in afc on X-T4

What I mean is that actual exposure in the file is just perfect despite what is SHOWN in EVF. I use the back button for AF when using AFC and shutter button for shutterr release

Will try the alternative config and report

Ok, so it doesn`t work like that for me, exposure in the file being the same as (wrongly) locked on shutter button half-press...

I use the back button for AF when using AFC and shutter button for shutterr release

... but I guess this is the reason for the difference - if you use back-button focusing, I guess it means you`re not even half-pressing the shutter button then, but just fully pressing it to take picture? If so, you don`t trigger shutter button half-press unexpected exposure locking in the first place.

Will try the alternative config and report

Thanks, do try to use the shutter button half-press for focusing alone (not back-button), as it might be what "SHUTTER AE" is tied to (where it should make sense to have it tied to whatever button is doing the "half-press" operation of focusing, like back-button in your case, but might be it`s not how it works).

In the Config menu, button dial setting, scren 2 set shutter AF-C to off fo both AE and AF

Then the AF is bone with the back button AF-L the bug us still present as what is shown but exposure is oerfect

remains wrong infos in EVF (and LCD) but the camera works perfectly this is while I did not notice the bug ....

Setting "SHUTTER AF" (alongside "SHUTTER AE") is another piece of the puzzle, indeed, great observation, thanks - when both are set to OFF, half-pressing the shutter button in AF-C mode does not lock exposure anymore, which is now correct.

Turning either "SHUTTER AF" or "SHUTTER AE" to ON locks exposure again, which should depend on "SHUTTER AE" alone, not "SHUTTER AF", being a (recently introduced?) bug.

Then the AF is bone with the back button AF-L the bug us still present as what is shown but exposure is oerfect

remains wrong infos in EVF (and LCD) but the camera works perfectly this is while I did not notice the bug ....

Yet, I don`t have any issues with both "SHUTTER AE" and "SHUTTER AF" turned OFF and shutter button half-press, even EVF (and LCD) show the correct (non-locked) exposure But I admittedly didn`t use back-button focus, so there is no focus attempt at all (not being an issue for me if manual lens is used, though, but not a real option with an auto-focus lens, I guess).

And truly, like you said, trying with an auto-focus lens and back-button focus does show exposure (wrongly) locked in EVF/LCD again, yet once the image is taken it is actually exposed correctly (as if exposure was not locked, which is correct), so being different from what was shown on screen before taking the picture... eh.

Noticed the same issue yesterday. I don't have the situation very often where I want to keep the shutter half pressed while focus tracking a subject that moves form a bright to dark area and back, but that's a typical situation where I want Shutter AE lock off in AF-C mode.

I also would like to report to Fuji, but am curious of what is the best option, since I have the idea that Fuji is hard to reach if you're not an X-Photographer.

Would that be fujifilm.com/contact/ and then choose country and fill in the form?
Or zhi_chi, what email address do you use for bug reports?
I filled in that contact form last year for a bug with Swiping in the Hundred-frame view, never heard anything.

I used the "Contact Tokyo Headquarters" just below contact.fujifilm.com. Yeah, and I also wonder whether they will see it or not.

I'm happy to see many more people reporting this issue to Fuji. Maybe they will see it soon. I think I will send this to their Facebook account as well.

Still got version 1.0 on my XT4 as I haven’t had it long. In AF-C exposure is not locked when I  set shutter AF to off.

I usually keep the setting to ON, but I noticed when set to off that when you recompose as the exposure changes the shutter speed set to Auto changes as the exposure changes in the viewfinder. But the ISO also set to Auto doesn’t. ISO only shows it’s value at half press when the shutter AE setting is ON. I never noticed this before

As said, I reported to Contact Tokyo Headquarters.
This is the text I used:

Settings:
- AF switch set to AF-C.
- Set Up, Button/Dial settings:
Shutter AF, both AF-S and AF-C set to On.
Shutter AE, AF-S/MF set to On, AF-C set to Off.
Now as Shutter AE lock for AF-C is set to Off, the exposure is still locked while having the shutter pressed halfway.
Pointing to a dark scene, press the shutter halfway, then pointing to a bright area while keeping the shutter pressed halfway, exposure values don't change (they should adjust to the brighter scene).

When also Shutter AF, AF-C is set to Off, both shutter speed and exposure are not locked. So Shutter AF Off works for both shutter speed and exposure now.

This bug was introduced in firmware version 1.20.

I also included a link to this topic.

And this is their reply:

when you change the position while pressing the shutter button half way down, the camera needs some time to adjust to the different brightness level. Please wait some seconds to give the camera the chance toadjust. Currently there is no plan to change this behavior via Firmware.

Could hardly believe what I read. Wait some seconds? That would make the camera unusable slow.

Are only X-Photographers taken serious? It looks like the person didn't even read carefully.

That was one seriously frustrating answer

out of curiosity… did anyone get it to work by waiting some seconds?

I actually do not even understand the answer. Of cource, the camera reacts instant on brightness changes, I cannot even think of a camera that would not.
Even if you keep the shutter half pressed for minutes after reframing, nothing changes.
Need to find a way to let someone at Fuji actually grab an X-T4 (with firmware 1.20) and look for themselves.

If everyone who doesn't like this bug reports to Fuji, that will definitely help...
