Practicing using my g9 for birds in flight, these where some of the better ones from yesterdays outing, really fun birds and like how the pictures come out!
During the outing i switched lenses with my friend and borrowed my old 40-150 and remembered why i loved that lens, and comparing it to the 100-400 i also remembered why i sold it, thinking of getting the 200 f2.8 or 300 f4! (or the sony 200-600)

I think you got some great action shots of these gulls. However, the images seem a bit soft to me when looked at with DPreview's loupe tool. What do you think?
I am trying to improve my own BIFs and, in all honesty, I'm struggling to get sharp in flight images. I'm using the same lens you have but with an Oly EM1iii body.
I've seen a number of really sharp BIFs posted with this same lens and my shots are soft in comparison. For example, see this great shot by Gary0319 (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/65078464 ) at 350mm on the Oly EM1iii body. I know people usually only post their best shots, so I'm sure that this shooter has his fair share of soft or out of focus shots, but he's got a number of very sharp BIFs in his gallery.
I'd like to hear what you and others have to say about the sharpness of these shots. Maybe I'm learn something too? I'll follow the posts on this thread ... thanks for posting!
Thank you!
About the sharpness it could get better! Think I could use an even faster shutter speed, have alot more detail on stationary birds and don't know if its missed focus or too slow shutter speed or ois in combination with panning. Perhaps a mix of everything!
Still much to learn
I Looked at Gary0319s picture, such a great capture, I think better then anything i have managed this far. I have only inspected it on my phone and it is very sharp but on my phone not much fine details, need to look it up on my monitor before being able to tell with certainty but thinking a different blend of noisereduction and sharpening then I would use loosing most fine detail, but hard to tell on the phone.
Intrested in more discussion and will try some different edits on my better birds to see If I can get an approximation of that look
Looking forward to more comments and dialogues!
Kind regards
Mats
