Fujifilm XF 70-300mm F4-5.6 compatibility question

Can anyone confirm that the Fujifilm XF 70-300mm F4-5.6 can be used with the XF2X TC WR teleconverter?

Yes, there are examples in several threads by Baobab and earlier by iRanN

Yes, but  the results are not quite good with the 2xTC, leading to a loss of contrast and sharpness, a mushy rendition

The results however are different according to the distance: for near to close , with a good denoise software it is ok At far distances the results are really mediocre better to crop from the lens + 1.4TC

With the 1.4TC the results are good with a moderate loss of sharpness (see my posts)

Re: Fujifilm XF 70-300mm F4-5.6 compatibility question

Thanks for the assurance as well as the comments about the two converters- interesting.  I have the 100-400 with the x2 converter but due to my age and its size and weight it doesn't get enough use.

Except for fairly frequent imaging of the sun in my search for sun spots! (I would add - with the appropriate filter!)

I am planning to sell or trade in the "Big Boy" and go for the 70-300.

Fear not, as the 2x TC works great.   Keep in mind, all TC's create some loss of IQ and the larger the TC, the more IQ loss can occur.

However using a TC is still usually preferable to enlarging an image taken without a TC. As expected, a smaller TC, i.e. a 1.4x will yield images with better IQ than with a longer 2x TC.

However, images with a 2X TC are usually perfectly acceptable and with just a bit of post work i.e. some sharpening, such images are just fine.

Fuji's 2X TC doesn't get a lot of love but with it's limitations (as with any TC) and applying a little post work, images are still excellent.

I use it regularly with my Fuji 100-400 with no complaints and the 2x TC will work well with your 70-300.

Yes, great results are possible

This combination is unforgiving and requires great technique, particularly with the sub standard OIS of the Fuji 70-300.  Expect a lower than usual keeper rate when using this combination, yet when it works it's sweet.

I don't agree about OIS that I find excellent about 5 stops, even with the 1.4TC I can shoot at quite slow speeds

"sub-standard OIS of the Fuji XF 70-300" is quite a bold statement - any evidence for it?

I'm not the only person to have complained.  Lower your shutter speed and watch what happens.

Re: XF 70-300mm with 2x example

Sub-standard implies there is a standard to which the IS can be measured.

Below are four images taken handheld with the 70-300 with TC1.4 and X-T4 from 1/250 to 1/15 - I would suggest that in the circumstances the IS of the system is good by any standard (allowing for image degradation from the uploading process here):

1/250

1/125

1/60

1/15

Thank  you for demonstrating the problem.  Only the first image lacks motion blur.

I like this lens as it's light and very sharp.

I wondered about having a defective copy yet Hector just demonstrated the pore OIS:

It does better with the 2xTC than the 100-400 IMHO.
