Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D vs XF 14mm f/2.8 R
1

I already have XF 23mm f/1.4 and XF 14mm f/2.8

I feel my XF 14mm not wide enough and not making big difference from XF 23mm I have. IT is different but not very different as I wanted.

My nokia 5.3 mobile has a wide camera equivalent of 13mm (in full frame) and despite the picture quality is worse i like that focal length. My XF 14 isn't' wide enough to cover that field of view.

I"m thinking about replacing my XF 14mm with Laowa 9mm. So far I never had to use XF 14mm on group people shot but it can be used. I'm worried that 9mm can never be used even in group of people in closed spaces considering it's ultra wide perspective.

Still i never had to grab my XF 14 to shoot people. I could manage with 23mm so far this is what led me thinking in to go for 9mm and keep it primarily for landscape and architecture.

I like to hear you advices. May be getting 9mm a good move from 14mm?

Please comment about the image quality difference between these lenses too if you have used both of them.

If you really need wide, then that is that, nothing much to say. For me, 14mm (21mm - eq in FF) is borderline too wide, but I do like it for landscapes. And the 14mm lens is top quality for that.

I had one for a while. IQ is great but 9mm is VERY(!) wide and I found it useful only for very specialized use cases. The 10-24 is much more useful in my view.

If you don't want/need something that extreme, there is also the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f2. It has a lot of good reviews.

I am waiting my copy to arrive by mail

9mm is realllly specific. I'd suggest 10-24 instead.

Like somebody else said, 14mm also is almost too wide sometimes, and sometimes a 16mm would have worked better... but, I'd rather have a little wiggle room.

I sold my XF14 for Laowa 9mm, 14 is just not wide enough.

So my primes are Laowa 9mm, 23mm and 56mm (both Viltrox), these covered all I need for portrait, events and occasional landscape/general snap shots.

The optic quality is very good around centre frame, and poor corners, especially if you tilt your camera, the corners are being pulled and distorted. Not a problem to me since I shoot portrait with it and like to add vignette. For landscape when you stop down, the corners are totally usable.

Check my IG, you can see some photos took with the Laowa.

We are in the same boat. SO you didn't regret your decision getting 9mm while selling 14mm for it? On a side note i have 23mm and 56mm from Fuji as well

Yes i also feeling that 14mm is not wide enough.

I checked your insta. Good photos there but since i have an action block i can't like them. Just want to say you have great portraits. But i couldn't find wide shots made with 9mm. May be you are cropping them?

Re: Laowa 9mm f/2.8 Zero-D vs XF 14mm f/2.8 R

I have the XF 16 f/1.4 and XF 14 f/2.8, I hardly bring out the XF14 ever since I got the XF16.

I needed something wider than 14/16, and Laowa 9mm was high up in my list. In the end I the XF 8-16 instead, and sold the XF14.

I considered the XF8-16 over Laowa 9 for the following reasons:

- weather-sealing

- goes down to 8mm, and goes up to 16. Essentially I can cover both my 14 and 16 if I do not need f/1.4.

Yes the XF8-16 is expensive and bulky, buy my reasoning is that it replaces at least 3 possible lens (Laowa 9, XF14, XF16) and it has great IQ.

My 2¢: I don't think you can conceive of the 9mm 'replacing' the 14mm, it's just so different. Rather, if you need/like that sort of, very specific, thing, go for it. I like the size of it very much, especially on an x-t20/30 type body. The 2 (bigger but good and more flexible) zooms 10-24 and 8-16 have lots to offer, as others have pointed out.

As always, depends on you and your use proclivities.

Good luck

Ian

14 is just too safe and ordinary, it a good focal length to some but if I am shooting wide angle I want it very wide.

These are taken with the Laowa, and I have corrected the distortions a bit since they are portrait photos, I don't want the proportion to be too weird.

And without Laowa I don't think I can captured this shot below.

Thank you..
Actually i find 14mm not wide enough for some architecture shots (Hindu temples, churches, forts) and landscape.

If you are taking people and ok with-it then definitely it will be ok for what i want it for

How is the sharpness of the Laowa 9mm compared to the 14mm? I had the option of picking up a used Zeiss 12mm or  Fuji 14mm and ultimately chose the 14 because it was sharper. Could’ve been sample variation; they were both used and I could only compare those two exact lenses, but even compared to the other Fuji lenses I’ve used or owned I find the 14mm to be particularly sharp.

Yeah, there is definitely a use for a 14mm/15mm FF equivalent prime lens, and there are quite a few of them on FF... Canon 14, Nikon 14, Samyang 14, Voigtlander 15, Laowa 15, etc.

But I don't think it *replaces* the more traditional 20mm/21mm/24mm prime lens range either.

If you're serious about landcapes, ultrawide shots, astro, etc., you'll probably want both eventually.
