Re: Reviews of E-pl6? IQ mainly

Mainly bought a red one because of a lens with it. And color... Tried to find reviews, IQ ("not tested"), not easy at all. Compared to G3? GX7?

It's basically and E-PL5, so that's your best bet for reviews I think

The IQ is fine.  The shutter is extremely loud, the loudest I’ve encountered on any camera.  The image stabilization on mine stopped working, but I don’t find that to be a limitation.  David Thorpe’s YouTube video on how he has it set up made a big difference in the handling of the camera.

I have the EPL5 and had the G3.

There are only minor software differences between the EPL5 and EPL6

Overall, I think the EPL5 is a better camera than the G3. The only real advantage of the G3 is the EVF. I got the VF3 to go with my EPL5 but I don't use it much.

The EPL5's sensor is much about the same as the newer 16mp sensors used in later models. The stabilizer, however, is the older 2-axis version and is better turned OFF. That said, the G3 does not have any stabilization.

My favourite lens for the EPL5 is the Panny 12-32. Its OIS is better than the IBIS. The EPL5 was the first Oly body to let you choose between OIS or IBIS.

The colour and IQ are on par with the newer bodies and, I think, is far better than the G3's colour and IQ. I have my EPL5 set to Portrait colour mode for OOC jpegs. The lack of a filter makes the photos look a bit sharper.

The kit Oly 14-42RII that came with the body is not too good. While it is excellent at 14mm, the IQ falls off rapidly at 20mm or above. That is why I replaced it with the Panny 12-32.

Minor quibble, I have the "silver" body. However, it is not quite silver. It has a pinkish tinge to it. (other Oly bodies also have this colour). The problem is, Oly silver lenses do not match. The Panny 12-32 matches better. I have never seen a red one.

Thanks, a good help! Have not thought about more Olympus yet, had to be with EVF.

Could be useful, my first Olympus, only used for "testing".

Thanks! I know the IS is not the best. But leave it on now and use the Panasonic 20mm. Later turn it off and put it on tripod maybe with Sigma 60mm to do some higher ISO. And later Panasonic 12-32.

Looked back at some G3 images, can't see the colors are that bad. But always had some problems with clouds colors, can't get what I see.

Also got GX7 which I like best. But E-PL6 which came with a scratched screen is what I put in a bag og large pocket. Never do much testing, real use is better. Even begin to get hold of the menus...

Re: Reviews of E-pl6? IQ mainly

Model  Overall  Color Depth   Dynamic Range   Low-light ISO

Olympus E-PL5 72   22.8 bits   12.3 Evs    889 ISO

Panasonic GX7  70   22.6 bits   12.2 Evs   718 ISO

Panasonic G3    56   21.0 bits   10.6 Evs    667 ISO

G3 is old of course. But really had thought GX7 was closer to E-PL5 in low light.

Re: Reviews of E-pl6? IQ mainly

Went for a lens and got a better camera then I knew. Really good reviews. My best MTF camera! Mostly easy to use, but to find everything in the menus could be some work.

So will I buy Olympus with EVF instead of Panasonic. But the Olympus family tree is confusing...

In my case the E-PL5 "twin". Shutter is loud but I set 1/8 sec anti-shock delay which does not do anything for shutter shock (it still happens occasionally) but makes the shutter sound softer. Of course the 1/8 sec delay needs to be allowed for if shooting action, or turn it off and go back to fully noisy shutter.

The image stabilization on mine stopped working, but I don’t find that to be a limitation.

The old 2 axis IBIS always gave me 3 stops of stabilisation at any focal length, exactly the same as Panasonic Mega OIS that I ended up using with their 14-45mm and 45-150mm lenses.

Later went back to using IBIS when I bought the Oly 12-40/2.8 for my E-PL5, that made it a new camera with faster AF and better performance in lower light.

The old IBIS does seem to add a very tiny amount of blur to everything due to the way it works, when I moved the 12-40/2.8 to my E-P5 with its way better 5 axis IBIS I seemed to be getting more reliable results and it looked sharper. Just a feeling, not tested or proven.

As for EVF, I did buy the VF-2 but never really used it and now I never use the EVF on any camera.

David Thorpe’s YouTube video on how he has it set up made a big difference in the handling of the camera.

Some of my scattered notes on E-PL5 will mostly apply directly to E-PL6 http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/50-epl5-comments.html

And my timeline will help sort out the various Olympus bodies http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/80-Oly-timeline.html

Re: Reviews of E-pl6? IQ mainly

Its good camera BUT:

IBIS sux. use with OIS lumix lenses

suffers from SHUTTERSHOCK (1/60- 1/250 is blurry every time) and no 0 sec antishock

no electronic shutter (no timelapse, no live composite)

no focus peacking

no any dials to operate (it does have one and it always dyes=) . Its more like point and shoot camera.

So if ITS ok for you- GO FOR IT. I have PM2 (its the same camera) and I like it for IQ and cheapness.
