Upgrading from EOS 350D?
2

I have been happy with my EOS 350D with EFS 17-85mm over the past 15 years, but it is a little dated, specification wise, so I'm considering upgrading. As I have never bought myself into the Canon universe, I am quite open for something completely different.

I like the idea of going mirrorless, don't need a lightning fast AF, and don't want to shell out a lot more than EUR 600 for a body. Would be great if I can keep the lens, although it is not a deal breaker.

Do you have any suggestions on an upgrade?

I have been happy when I upgraded from the Canon T2i (550D) and Canon T3i (600D) cameras to Canon T7i (800D) cameras.  I don't know if there's enough improvement in the Canon T8i (850D) camera to justify any additional costs.  I'm curious about the mirrorless cameras too.  I'm looking at the Canon EOS R (mirrorless), but it's so expensive compared to the ones I have now.  I don't know if the Canon M50 (mirrorless) would be much of an improvement or not over the somewhat equivalent Canon DSLR cameras.  I have been hearing that mirrorless is the "future" for years, but DSLR cameras still are popular.

I give another vote for 800D(t7i), if you are not into making a lot of videos, especially in 4k, I think there is not reason to pay more for the 850D

That's a good point about making videos. I haven't done that yet, other than make some sample videos (to see if I could do it). But I do want to take more videos in the future. We see so many videos on the internet. A lot of them are from people using their cell phones. This shows how popular videos are for people. I would think that a person would want their Canon DSLR camera to take better videos than what they could get with their phones. It's new territory for me, but I think it's an important thing for us to consider.

The Camera of the Future and Always Will Be

"I have been hearing that mirrorless is the "future" for years, but DSLR cameras still are popular."

The principal distinguishing advantage of cameras over smartphones are the big, heavy things you attach to them like long lenses and flash units.

DSLRs ergonomically win hugely here. I've spent the last several months finding that out.

I would look at the M50.  You can adapt your existing lenses to it.  It has dual auto focus and is small, so easy for travelling.  Or if you want a mirrored camera, you might look at the 200D or 250D.  Both small and lighter, more features. I believe the 250D has 4K, if that's important(it's not important to everyone).

The high price of the EOS R comes from it being full frame, so it is not reasonable to compare it to the Rebel you use now. Personally, I feel that the status of DSLR vs mirrorless is like World War II by the end of 1942: the days of DSLR are counted, but it will take years before mirrorless will be dominant.

I upgraded from a T6.

I got the T8i and like it a lot.

I find the M50 a little underwhelming, with short battery life, and it makes me feel that mirrorless is promising, albeit not at full potential. Currently, I am tempted to wait another year to see what this technology will bring us...

Go for the 850D!  I got mine back in January, and it’s the best one yet!  Check it out here in the reviews.

Re: Upgrading from EOS 350D?

I had a 350D several years ago. Now I use a 400D and a 30D. I also have Nikon DSLRs.

In my opinion, for non-professional dslrs, nikon is far better than canon in tracking moving subjects. If you always taking photos for kids, nikon dslr is better choice.

Re: Upgrading from EOS 350D?

Have you ever used a Canon T7i (800D) or Canon T8i (850D) or some of the other newer Canon DSLR cameras of the same generation? The Canon DSLR cameras you describe are "ancient" in terms of technology...like well over 12 years old. I never have the need to track moving subjects but I think that's because the technique and types of pictures I take are different. Could you describe specifics and provide comparisons to what you mean with up-to-date Canon DSLR cameras?

DSLR AF systems are no new at all.

OK, if that is what you think. Have fun with your old cameras. I was using 8 and 10 megapixels Olympus DSLR cameras over 12 years ago. They were great for the time but do not even come close to comparing to the more modern cameras.  I would suggest that you read the reviews.  On the internet, you might find a website that will help you compare one camera to another.
