Femme views forest! - or: Where would *You* put the focus plane?
2

Hi!

Here is a little focus bracketing sequence. Where would *You* put the focus plane? And why would You do so?

1. hairs end - closest to camera

2. closer to the hair tie

3. hair tie in focus

4. focusplane at the back of the head

5. focus somewhere in the middle between the back of the head and the right ear

6. focus plane across the auricle

Photo sequence shot with my good old mighty SD9 and the Carl Zeiss Jena (GDR) M42 Pancolar 1,8/50mm fully open at f/1,8

Greetings and thanks in advance for Your feedback and suggestions!

Voted #5 because, at that f-number, it gives a good impression of depth without too much blurring of the nearest part.

Now I double hate you because I had that same lens on a Praktica MTL-3 for many years before it too broke.

I had a 50mm Pancolor on my Exakta for years and foolishly sold it (with other Exakta lenses). Never dreaming that one day there would be digital cameras that I could use them on.

Now, they are expensive.

What happens if you focus stack those pictures ?

Is this a trick question? Makes no sense.

Either focus on the scenery beyond her, or ask your model to turn around. Backs of peoples’ heads are disgusting.

No! To be honest I am surprised to read about such a mental connection.

Either focus on the scenery beyond her, or ask your model to turn around. Backs of peoples’ heads are disgusting.

Thanks for Your opinion! Of course there are "turned around" versions of this shooting. (Which I will not show due to privacy concerns.)

Impolite and provocative.

Either focus on the scenery beyond her

It is obvious to everyone except you that the scenery is deliberately out-of-focus as an intended part of the composition.

, or ask your model to turn around.

Comment already address by the OP

Backs of peoples’ heads are disgusting.

You are entitled to your opinion which may not be shared by anyone here ...

While I chose the last auricle location I would also jack up the aperture if similar bokeh were available.  Front and back bokeh work well for a subject in the middle of the image not so well when the subjects closer view also is less in focus.  JIHMO

More disgusting stuff comes out of the front of peoples heads than the back. In addition there are  some areas where disgusting stuff comes out that are one of the most popular shots by male (especially) photography.

Hello wood_gnome,

Interesting exercise

I chose the above, as personally i would consider it a photograph of someone in contemplation. And therefore the focus on the head area primarily .

Of course, there are many possible approaches based on one's perceptions!

These are very good photographs...and i am reminded of the exact same lens i used to have quite a long time ago...

Thank you for sharing and regards!
