Phantograms

Having a first play with phantograms:-

Cha-Cha too wide on last image so vertical height (virtual) too large.

Re: Phantograms

Nice pics and good depth, but some vertical misalignment is present in the first two and and a severe vertical misalignment is present in the third. (can be easily corrected)

Would you kindly expand on the 'vertical misalignment'. I assume phantograms can be photographed from an angle and not just 'square on'?

Please use the third image to demonstrate. I am not sure how to re-perspect the image without displacing the zero displacement surface. Advice/help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

Perhaps this is what you mean?

I have altered the final image perspective to give a more parallel verticality. Please tell me if this is what you refered to. If so, I get it, thank you.

Re: Phantograms

I think you misunderstood my comment.
The subjects are interesting, the composition is good, the framing is good, the whole artistic component is good. 😀

I was referring only to the vertical alignment of the elements corresponding to each pair of images (when mounting stereograms).
An incorrect alignment produces a visual discomfort proportional to the alignment error and the size of the image when viewed. I look at images on a medium size 4k screen (55") and the misalignment is immediately noticeable.
It was not easy to correct the anaglyph in the absence of the original images, but I tried to show you what it is about in a direct comparison.😀

The yellow bars reflect the intensity of the misalignment of two identical elements in the image pair. They should be closer to the horizontal position.

I hope you're not upset. 🙏

Not upset at all and no offence taken. I am trying to learn more about phantograms, which I have only just come across, and criticism is very welcome.

I get what you refer to now. My problem is that with phantograms, as opposed to plain 3D, moving the left image vertically vs. right also moves the zero displacement level as well. That zero displacement level should also have no vertical discrepancy (or horizontal) and improvement of the closest part of the subject may be a compromise with the furthest.

Thank you for your input.

Re: Phantograms

StereoPhoto Maker (SPM) have auto adjustments option, and also some manual adjustments possibility.

If the lenses used are not very well corrected regarding distortions, the correction process can be difficult.
You can leave more space around the subject (not to be close to image borders, where the distortions are more pronounced), and to do a desired crop at the end of process.

I took this a few years ago. It is what I would call a true Phantogram. I took the left and right photos ( cha-cha style ) at an angle of 45 degrees to the ground. I placed 4 small stones on the ground around the car such that if you drew a line between the stones the angle between these lines would be at 90 degrees. You can just see 3 of the 4 stones on the image in the corners. In Photoshop I stretched the images at the top, so that the stones on the image were at 90 degrees to each other. The anaglyph 3d image should be view with the monitor at an angle of 45 degrees to you, ie the top of the monitor is further from you than the bottom of the monitor. It takes a lot of effort to get the alignment right ( even when using StereoPhotoMaker ).

Re: Phantograms

It is good to know these things about phantograms. 👍
Printed are easier to study and understand at 45*.

Re: Phantograms

awesome photos and awesome dog! in anaglyph the vertical misaligment isn't that noticeable, but it's easy to fix with stereophotomaker

Vertical Phantograms

Exprimenting with vertical base phantograms. VERY suitable for portraits wherein the subject comes into your room space. Much easier to comprehend with a vertical screen for me.

Anaglyph:-

or X-Eye:-

Sorry about the subject, couldn't find anyone to experiment on. In true Edward Jenner fashion, I vaccinated myself !
