49mm Black Pro-mist on XF 35mm f1.4 (52mm), will it work?

Hi, any idea if a 49mm filter will work flawlessly with a 52mm filter thread + stepdown ring? I plan to buy a Black Pro-mist filter to be used both on my X100T and 35mm f1.4. I’m also getting the Hoage lens hood for T. So my dilemma is if I buy the 52mm BPM, I can’t use the lens hood for the T.

So is a 49mm BPM + stepdown ring a viable option for both my T and 35 f1.4?

Also, is the BPM 1/4 too much for everyday shooting? Contemplating between 1/8 and 1/4 strength.

Can't speak to vignetting with the step down ring but as to the 1/8 vs 1/4, in my opinion the 1/4 is the one to get. The 1/8 is a little too subtle in my opinion. Unlike the several other companies that make something like it, the black promist retains quite a bit of contrast so it doesnt just make the whole frame washed out. Because of that I feel like that's why I prefer the 1/4. It's noticable but not over the top.

Hi,

I know nothing about the BPM filter, but as to whether the 35/1.4 will vignette, give me a little time and I think I have a 52-49 step-down ring and will check it for you with some other filter later today.

It will depend on the thickness of the step-down ring plus filter rim thickness, so it will vary with ring and filter brand.  However, I know from experience that most (not all!) Fuji lenses can use the filter size the next step down because most have fairly broad nomenclature rings sitting outside the optical path.

Cheers, Rod

Hi,

I've just checked my 35/1.4 with a 52-49 step-down ring and a B+W filter with a standard rim thickness (ie not particularly thin).  It doesn't vignette at either f1.4 or f11 when focused at infinity, which is where vignetting is usually worst with an external focus lens.  I also checked a few intermediate and close distances - no problem.

Good luck.  Post a few from your new filter - I'd be interested to see the effect.

Cheers, Rod

Thanks a bunch! Really appreciate it. I think I'll order the 49mm and step down ring. And sure, I'll post some of the effects. Thanks again!

Do you have the 1/4? How about shooting backlight, isn't too much halation? I'm just thinking maybe 1/4 is too much for everyday photography, unlike the subtleness of 1/8, you can just leave it on your camera and shoot.

Love the Pro mist 1/4 on my XF35MMF1.4

Shot today during golden hour in a carpark

F1.4 ISO800 1/1250sec

I got a 52mm to 55mm step up ring to another lens and it works great
