20:9 is a rediculous screen ratio
3

One of the biggest nits I had about my new Moto One Ace, was that the screen was so narrow. The thing about that is, you just end up not being able to use so much of the screen for most photos, and video 🙁 Like what's the point ? I mean, I don't care if the darn thing is 12" tall.... If it's only 2.9" wide, most everything you view will be constrained by the width anyway. The taller the screen is, the more wasted space you have.

I know someone is going to mention people with small hands... I HAVE small hands, for a big guy anyway, and I had no problem with my ZTE Blade max that had a screen nearly 1/2" wider than my Moto One Ace.

So I got to looking around, and come to find out, most (all that I found) of the XLG flagship Androids and iPhones are using this goofy, pointless 20:9 ratio 🙁 IMPO, the most optimal screen size aspect ratio, would be exactly that of my wide screen monitor... Or, 16.8:9

Maybe this is a good thing.... Because if I found a super duper flagship phone with a screen that was like 6.7-7" tall, and 3.6" wide.... Plus it had a AMOLED screen, big battery, tons of RAM, etc, I'd probably be spending another $1300 and giving my Moto One Ace to me GF.... She has REALLY small hands 🙂 But then she's only 5ft tall, so...

Hey when I posted this, I wondered if it was just me ? But apparently not....

"Sunday debate: Classic 16:9 vs. Taller screen ratios - Reader comments" https://m.gsmarena.com/newscomm-31429p2.php

Check this article then scroll through the responses. It seems that a LOT of folks feel exactly the same as I do. In fact, it appears to me that the "majority" would prefer a 16:9. A 20:9 ratio is just a dumb waste of screen space.

I prefer not only 16:9, and phones are way too big nowadays. Max 6.7" or 6.8". I favour the smaller 4" to 5" phones which have all disappeared.

I bought the iPhone SE 2nd Gen 4.7". The next size up is about 5.5" to 6.1"

Dimensions wise though it seems more about getting an edge to edge display, than having a bezel. The iPhone 11 Pro Max had about the same physical size as the iPhone 8 Plus.

https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8131&idPhone2=9846&idPhone3=10508

I previously bought a Sony Xperia X Compact and XZ1. Sony and Apple were the only two companies making compact smartphones and only Apple has the small phone models.

Foldable devicess are in interesting option but too expensive.

Well I need them big to be able to see them (with anything but my strongest reading glasses) and also to be able to type.

But with my new tall, skinny @$$ phone, it might as well be a 5 1/2"er, because the key pad and photos or whatever else I'm looking at is not much bigger, than say a 5 1/2" IF it were a 16:9 vs a 6.7" which is a 20:9 🙁

Just the lamest thing about an otherwise awesome phone 🙁

I think some things don't change. It's been this way since monitors were 16:12 (4:3) then 16:10, 16:9, 18:9 (2:1) and now 20:9 and 21:9. The wider the monitor the less height. I didn't like the loss of height and 16:10 monitors are practically gone.

Ahhh geez... Are they really doing this with monitors too ? I got my monitor, a really nice LG 16:9 Ultra 4K, 27" 2 years ago. It was a wider aspect ratio than my monitor before... But I think 16:9 is very asthetically pleasing, and I crop most of my photos close to that when it works, anyway.

But if this monitor dies in a few years and all I can get is a 22:9, I'd be seriously upset !

I think I'm going to go look at monitors now, and see if I'm already screwed....

Well, yeah. Those mostly are gaming monitors. My current Dell Ultrasharp UP2414Q isn't sold anymore and the ratio is 16:9.

And don't get me wrong...

I get the whole thing about having video way out into our peripheral vision... I mean, 1) as long as the center portion is still tall enough, and 2) the programming is wide enough to actually use all the width of that crazy wide screen, that's awesome.

But back to phones.... I NEVER watch videos that fill a 20:9 screen full (and stretching a video to fill the screen chops off some image at the top and bottom, so that's not an option either) and I think going through all of my best photos, I had one panorama that worked almost perfectly on the 20:9 screen.... Out of several hundred. Dumb ☹️

Multi-tasking.

The odd ratio is useful if you have two apps running at the same time - one on the top half of the screen and one on the bottom. Maybe keeping a map app open at the top and your music player open at the bottom, for example (I've done that on my Note 20 Ultra while driving). But, this is rare, and something that many never do.

Re: Multi-tasking.

Yes, I've never done that, or the split screen running two apps at the same time either. Even if the phone can do that, I can't. ADD.... Give me one thing to focus on, and I'm good. Two things, and I'm totally messed up.

Sometimes I might have 6 or 8 things open at once in the BG, but never more than one thing open on top.

I've had fun driving with Waze in the top half and Google Maps in the bottom, both taking me to the same site and showing different routes.

I've never tried this for Maps. I don't think my 4.7" iPhone can do this anyway.

Please tell me your 4.7" phone is at least a little older , with a 16:9 screen ratio... Because a 4.7" screen with a 20:9 screen would leave your text and images like "micro small" !

Heck, with my 6.7" screen, and the dumb 20:9 ratio, my text and images are already smaller than I'd prefer, as it is ! Mine might as well be a 5.5" screen > with 16:9. It would be the same text and image size I have now anyway.

My iPhone SE has a basic design which dates back to iPhone 6 from 2015. Both are 16:9 phones. My iPhone SE appears to be the last 16:9 phone from Apple.

https://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=10170&idPhone2=6378

There could be a as yet unannounced SE Plus (16:9 Ratio, hopefully). The newer iPhones iPhone X or later (All iPhone X, 11 and 12 models etc ) have a 20:9 Ratio.

If Apple, or ANY phone company for that matter, were to come out with a 16:9 ratio phone... even right now, after I just bought a new phone, I'd be switching to this new 16:9

And btw, I hope this thread will remind you when it comes time to get a new phone... That TALL screen will NOT get you a bigger image. It will just give you more wasted screen space. And if you want to have the same image / text size you have now with your little 4.7" 16:9 phone, your going to need at least a 5.5" 20:9...

I can't imagine how small images, video, and text would look on a small (less than 5") screen, with a 20:9 ratio ?!

I cannot imagine small images and text but Apple has a 20:9 iPhone 12 mini 5.4" device. Their smallest iPhone 12 for those who wanted a compact iPhone (but more costly) than the cheaper iPhone 4.7".

Here is a size comparison from the smallest 4" to 6.7" (largest).

https://www.macrumors.com/guide/iphone-12-size-comparison/

The original iPhone SE 4" and SE 2 4.7" have a 16:9 ratio. The iPhone 7 and 8 Plus have a 16:9 ratio. The rest have a 20:9 ratio.

My phone is 21:9. I like it. But, it's never been my goal in life to join the herd. In fact, if something has millions of devoted followers I tend to go somewhere else.

I'll be 80-years-old this year and my vision sucks. I don't have any trouble with my phone and if I need to read much I slip on my reading glasses.

But, whatever you do, Fishchris, don't buy a 21:9. You might have a stroke.

Re: 20:9 is a rediculous screen ratio

Use cases and preferences differ. Splitting Android between an 8" tablet at home and a phone carry about, for years I thought a 5" 16:9 ZTE had the right balance of view with handhold and pocketability. A good price on a replacement 6" Moto with 18:9 kept the hand comfort while still nearly as pocketable - the extra screen real estate is not a big deal, but the nice AMOLED screen is. A third-party launcher adjusts icon sizes and app access. I'd suspect (without knowing) the 20:9 ratio is over-the-top and probably would not buy one.

Well if you had to buy a new one "yes" you would buy a 20:9, because that is all that is being made now. I know. I searched high and low, even from foreign companies. ALL of the top tier phones are now 20:9

BTW, Im getting used to the screen size of my new phone, and it has really been a great phone. But even now, Id give $100 to trade it for the exact same phone with the screen being 1/2" wider...

As above, use cases reasonably differ. Three years out (hopefully) from buying another phone will have to see what's available. With my tablet habits the newer hinged dual screen and folding screen formats (overpriced / screen durability in doubt) might consolidate use into one device and fit in my pocket on the go.
