2x extender. Fotodiox or viltrox or save

Hi all.

I'm buying my 70 200 2.8 soon for portrait work, but would like to also buy a 2x converter to use it for birds.

Birds is only a hobby and have limited budget. I could get a cheap fotodiox or viltrox 2x for less than 100 US or save for a Canon one next year.

I'm really falling in finding reviews for these 2x converters.

if you have the fund, i'd go for the canon 1.4x III/2.0x III, they work fantastic with 2nd gen canon lenses. i am not familiar with other names you have mentioned.

I would buy a used Canon EF 2x version 1.  You can get one for under $150.  It will be better than any third party unit.  It is the same as the EF 2x II, but without weather sealing.  The EF 2x III is marginally better for 3x the price.

I'm not in the US,  the canon one would cost me more than 5x the off brand.

I would have to save for about a year to afford it. It is a very big investment for me.

My experience with third party converters seems to be every time I upgrade to a new Canon body the converter is no longer compatible and that has not been the case the Canon converters.

You should be able to find one of the older used Kenko 2x for under $100.

Re: 2x extender. Fotodiox or viltrox or save

I have a very, very old Quantaray 2x TC that (kind of) works on an R5 except during bursts where the camera seems to reboot. You do get an error on screen before the reboot but you can continue to shoot. I couldn't tell you if images are lost at that point or if they finish writing to the card.

The converter quality itself is okay, very sharp with a 70-200mm f/2.8 II but obvious loss of contrast. AF locks in but with continuous focus if it happens to miss focus and go to infinity you have to help it come back by turning the MF ring.

I bought my TC more as a toy and I never would use it for anything serious because of the issues. If you can live with those kind of drawbacks, it's serviceable.

It's one of these and I probably bought it for about the same 10 years ago. So a great thing going for it is that if this auction is any indication, it holds up its value well.

I think it behaves similarly with the M6 II but I can't remember if it locks up even worse. At least with the R5, it reboots.

You should tell us which lens system your talking about. You have an RP, I would guess RF lens but then again my be your gear list is not up to date From the response's I think most assume EF At this time I think that Canon is the only one making extenders for RF lens's, or your going to get an EF lens and use a converter.

I have found the Kenko TELEPLUS HDpro to be good with EF lens's, I have both the 1.4 and the 2.0. The HDpro is there newest line. I use them because I use the 70-300 L where the rear lens element is just about flush with the very read of the lens and wont work with most extenders.

If you are thinking about an RF lens, no one makes an extender that works with the RF 70-200 f2.8 or f4

RF or EF, IS or no-IS

I assume you mean the original EF 2.8 - if you are actually getting the RF, then of cause you will need a RF extender as well

Birds is only a hobby and have limited budget.

While using an extender usually results in better image quality than cropping, you may still satisfy your "hobby" need and quality demand, by just cropping, depending on how you intend to use your images. I have a fair amount of images printed as A3 hanging on the walls from my first dSLR, the D30, which was only 3 Mpixel

The DGX Kenkos seem to be incompatible with newer cameras, but the Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4 (not DGX) that I bought 17 or so years ago still works with every lens I've tried it with on the R5.  As a second, hidden TC behind another one, however, it tends to cause incompatibilities.

I suspect that what Canon is doing is trying to determine how many items are connected to the mount and throttling power to the mount to a level which should be just enough, but if a hidden TC that doesn't report is in the chain, it may load the power supply so that the lens no longer operates.  I never had this problem with DSLR mode on my DSLRs, or with live view up to the 7D2, but my 90D in Live View has some of the same issues.

The combinations that work or fail is hard to guess, though.  For example, with my 400/4DO II, I can put the Canon 2xIII on it and put a Kenko 3x DG behind it, and it focuses and IS works, at f/24.  If I use just that 3x, though, it doesn't work!  It doesn't even work if I tape the TC pins!  It also doesn't work if I put the Kenko Pro 300 DG 1.4x behind the 2xIII; the IS just bangs, and if I turn the IS off on the lens, it works for a few shots and then gives a communication error.  None of this follows any simple logical pattern.

DG or DGX?  With what bodies?  In my experience, the body affects compatibility as much or more than the lens in many situations.

Sorry I missed your post, I use the DGX 1.4X and DGX 2.0X  extenders with the EF 70-300 L.  Both worked good on both my R and R6.

Does it work with a variety of lenses?  Perhaps they have worked out the problem in that series.  It is the Pro 300 DGX 1.4 that gave me problems with just about every lens.  Most of the positive reviews that I see about the Pro 300 DGX is with older cameras or Rebels.

Does yours allow reporting of two TCs combined?  F/8 AF on f/5.6 cameras (if you have one to test)?

To get most extenders to work with the 70/300 L,first you have to zoom the lens out so the rear elements move up the barrel, then you attach the extender.Remembering not to zoom back.So in effect it becomes a prime @ 420 or 600.
