Infrared conversion and IR lights for GX7 for nighttime animal video

I’ve been blessed with a phenomenon on my property that I want to photograph: Gray Foxes denning very close to my house in rural Central Coast California. I’ve got 2 trail cams set up and I was fortunate to get some great photos with my DSLR of fox kits during a rare afternoon appearance. I have a Panasonic GX7 body that I can spare for an IR conversion. I’m thinking of doing this so I can manually shoot high quality photos and video at night. I can bring power to the sight and it’s a fixed location, so I’m thinking of using the kind of IR flood lights that are sold for security camera use. I have no idea how much IR light I would need to be able to use the GX7 with reasonable settings (ISO not too high, 1/400 sec, F5.6 or so) with, for example, a 100-400mm lens. Has anyone tried something like this?

Since nobody has tried to give you an answer, let me try.

I have no experience into artificial IR light photography. That being said, I've noticed that IR floods are a lot cheaper than bright lenses.

So my first suggestion would ne to buy the most powerful IR flood for less than 50$. If it's too powerful, your μ4/3 camera will just use a faster shutter speed. Consequently, you'll get a sharper photo.

My second suggestion would be to use a bright zoom like the M.Zuiko 40-150mm F/2,8.

Hey there - a long while after you posted, but I made an account on here specifically to reply.

I wondered how you got on with your project - did you go with the GX7, or something else?

I've recently been walking the fields round near my house at night, currently to fill up a few water bowls for the critters during the UK heatwave.

I've been taking an old Sony handycam with nightshot out with me, and adding extra illumination with a Nightfox XC5 torch. I've been able to see well up to about 50ft, and make out larger animals like deer and foxes (with some autofocus issues) up to about 100ft with the torch beam on its narrowest focus.

I tried converting a Panasonic GF3 to full spectrum myself, but found it wasn't all that sensitive to the IR light - it worked indoors in enclosed spaces, but couldn't see anywhere near as well as the old Sony at anything greater than 5-8ft.

I've been eyeing up a converted GX7, as well as a converted G7 - but most of the infrared conversion chat online tends to be about daytime photography and filters etc, not about night vision.

Anyway, a lot of words to say I haven't tried what you're proposing specifically, but I've tried cheaper methods and got promising results - I've been able to see quite well with a 5W torch as my illuminator, so floodlights would likely do nicely - and I hope you've been able to experiment with a GX7 and can offer some insight into its night vision performance once converted!

Cheers

Sorry for my late answer.

Last Winter, I’ve switched to an OM-D e-m5 wide-spectrum IR camera because my Panasonic GX1 could only take only a few pictures in the cold before freezing. And you’re probably aware of the terrible reputation of Canadian Winters…

Since then, all my IR shots were taking during the daytime:

Your Panasonic GF3 has an old 12Mp sensor. It takes pictures full of noise at ISO 800 and up. If you buy a μ4/3 camera (to be converted to wide spectrum) take one that has a 16 Mp sensor (or better).

Last May, I’ve received an 850nm/940nm Night Vision IR Flashlight but have used a few minutes and didn’t have time to use it really.

So unfortunately, I’m not able to speak about my experience and give you interesting tips.

Sorry.
