Moving from APS-C (80D) to FF (R6 or RP)

Hi All

Upfront apologies for asking this question knowing it's been asked before. But I think my situation is a tad different than the others i've found.

I'm looking at moving over to FF for various reasons (better low light photography, improved landscape, faster focus etc.)

At the moment, i'm sitting with an 80D which i've had for ages with some decent EF glass collected over the years.

- Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L IS USM

- Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM

- Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM

- Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 DC HSM Art Lens

- Sigma 150-600mm f/5-6.3 DG OS HSM

In my mind, I have 3 options (keeping to a specific budget).

- RP along with some new RF lenses replacing some of the EF ones

- R6 with the adapter keeping my current lenses replacing the lenses at a later stage when RF lens prices come down a bit

- or sticking with DSLR and going to the 5D Mark IV

I mainly shoot outdoors (Landscape, Macro, Wildlife) with some informal portraiture occasionally. I have no interest in shooting video with my setup.

Your advice/input would be greatly appreciated

Came from a Mk IV and, if those are your only three... R6 all the way.  I stretched for the R5 and have no regrets whatsoever...and I had tons of glass as well.  My angle was to sell glass to get the R5 and then add on later. Worked great but these days EF glass is much cheaper second hand than it was.

Re: Moving from APS-C (80D) to FF (R6 or RP)

I'd go for the R6 if R5 isn't to be. I shoot landscape 80% of the time and use 24-105 90% of the time and 150-600 5% (wildlife) and wide angle 5%.

R6 and R5 are much later technology than RP.

I have 5D4 & 80D and bought RP w/24-240 while waiting for R5 & RF 24-105 f4. I doubt that I'll buy any other RF lenses because they sell for more than I think they would be worth to me. I'll use EF lenses with the adapter.

Just my thoughts.

Re: Moving from APS-C (80D) to FF (R6 or RP)

I had an RP and used it with adapted EF lenses only.  It’s a great little camera for its price.  It replaced my 6D2 and gave me similar image quality and an introduction to mirrorless.  A couple of months ago I got an R5 and handed the RP down to my daughter.  The R5 and R6 are in a completely different league from the RP.  You have good glass already.  Get the R6 or the R5 if you can stretch your budget, although the R6 might do some things better for your interests.  Get the Control Ring adapter and don’t worry about RF glass for now.  Just my not so humble opinion.

I would definitely go the R6 + Adapter route, if affordable!

The R6 has Canon's latest tech, far exceeding that of the "RP".

You'd be buying an Adapter, either way and you might decide to keep some EF glass (I've gone mostly RF for my R5, but I'm keeping my EF 16-35 F4L).

It might be worth it to accept the RP if it enables you to get the RF 24-105mm f/4.0 L earlier. The AF RP isn't the best choice for wildlife though. DR isn't great for landscapes, if that matters to you.

Good DR for landscapes, great AF for wildlife.

No.

In general you should get new glass first, however in this case you can't run the RF 24-105mm f/4.0 L on your current body. The RP and 5Dmk4 are incremental upgrades only, and 5Dmk4 isn't future proof, as for wildlife you will have to switch to mirrorless anyway. The RP is a nice camera, but probably not the best choice for landscapes.

So I would go R6 now and get RF glass later on. It gives you good DR, and great AF for wildlife (and everything else) immediately.

If you mainly shoot landscape, I'm not sure how much you're gaining that you'll notice making a switch. The EF glass you have will work fine/better on the R-bodies (AF). The occasional portrait shooting will certainly be better with an R6 and its eye AF.

For all-around shooting, I'd suggest swing to the R6. Having had a 5DmkIV and only based on comparative tests posted vs the R6, I'd say the R6 would give up very minor actual captured-detail-resolution compared to a 5DmkIV due to the less-intrusive AA filter on the R6. The cost difference between them is minor given performance.

However, if you pick out and crop details from landscapes, or want to, I don't see a gain there for your main use. A good used 5DsR or 5Ds will be a huge advantage for detailed landscapes and still pull off the everyday portrait shooting. Just a thought, anyway.

Your decision depends on what you want to gain. Better AF? The R6 no question and I think the R6 resolves detail better with fewer pixels than an RP if the pixel-peeping is a consideration. Rent both and compare, if you can. Good luck.
