Minolta 5000 reverts to 0 after battery change

Hi all, I hope this is the right way and place to ask this question, apologies if it isn't.

I have a new to me Minolta 5000. Is it normal that it thinks it has no film loaded (frame counter at 0) after the battery is taken out? I thought it was normal practise to take it out for conservation. Is there a way to tell it the roll is on the first frame?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum .

No , it's not normal .

The camera has a small internal battery in it to retain things like camera settings and film counter for when you take the main batteries to change them etc .

Normally the internal battery is recharged by the main batteries for when the main batteries are removed and all is well , camera settings remain and the film counter doesn't forget what the exposure is .

The problem here is the cameras been unused for a number of years ( it was made 36 years ago after all ) and has gone flat .

There is a possibility that if you leave the main batteries in the camera for a few weeks , it might recharge and be O.K .

Or it might be too late and the internal battery is dead .

I'm not sure that the internal battery is easily replaceable . It certainly wouldn't be worth paying someone to repair it !

When film is loaded in a camera I don't remove the batteries , so this has never been a problem .

As long as the batteries aren't to be left in long term where the issue of leakage can come up , this isn't an issue .

There isn't any significant battery drain with most film cameras , unlike some digital cameras .

How long does it take you to shoot a roll of film ?

The internally battery is a standard Lithium type and user-replaceable. Here's a video demonstrating the procedure for the 7000, and I think the 5000 is the same:

Hope this helps.

Thanks for that .

I had an idea they were user replaceable , but couldn't remember how far in they were .

( So not necessarily a job for anyone ).

It's a shame the O.P can't be arsed replying to their own thread to let us know how they got on .

Maybe putting fresh AA's in refreshed it , but we'll never know ...
