EVF vs Live View

After almost three years of full frame mirrorless cameras from Canon, I would just like to know if you're still mostly using the EVF vs Live View when shooting. I am at 70/30 in favor of Live View. What about you?

Are you only asking about full frame mirrorless? I use the screen for most of my M6II shooting (even though I have the EVF), but the EVF for most of my R shooting.

Re: EVF vs Live View

I really don't know the ratio, but I tend to use the LCD for portraits and macros  and the viewfinder outdoors or for action shots.   It's nice to have both.  I mix it up.

I don't really track my usage but I tend to use the rear LCD when using a tripod and the EVF when shooting handheld.  I believe I am more comfortable with EVF because of habits formed when shooting with a DSLR.

Well, good point, we might as well include that! Note however that most cropped body mirrorless Canon cameras don't come with built-in EVFs which might be by default driving use of live view.

Re: EVF vs Live View

I use the viewfinder for things like birds/subjects that need me to change the AF point often or distant/elevated subjects, or on days where its so bright in cant reasonably see the LCD.

Most of what I photograph is family and friends, every single one of which I am at least a foot taller than, so if I use the efv for those the angle is a bit unflattering. I shoot from roughly hip to chest height with the LCD so they all look better.

For stills, almost 100% EVF. Back screen only when on tripod or some support doing a tricky composition (rare in my shooting style)

Most of what I shoot is equine sports, with the camera on a gimbal. I can frame the action and zoom much more naturally and accurately with the EVF for that. If I'm shooting portraits, I also use the EVF, unless the camera is above or below my eye-level. For landscapes, architecture, real estate, etc., rear LCD is usually more convenient.

I always use EVF.  This is partly habit, after years of using dSLRs but also because I can hold the camera steadier when it is braced against my head using EVF.

In my opinion, the only goofy style is holding a mirrorless DSLR-format camera out in front to view the LCD in Live View at arm's length.

Otherwise, it depends on whether I'm shooting handheld--for which will be using the EVF--or supported--for which I will be using the LCD.

My portrait work is usually supported, my stage production work is usually hand-held.

when handhold is EVF Mostly, since thats less shaking grip than holding camera in front of you and looking at back LCD

on tripod i use mostly back LCD

That's exactly what I do. I tried shooting from the LCD, which would be great for my back, since I often have to scrunch up to shoot through gates, but I can't safely zoom in as tight while tracking action subjects. Like shooting gangsta style, accuracy suffers.

Handheld or monopod it's always EVF with LCD folded in. Tripod is almost always LCD with remote release.

Re: EVF vs Live View

Interesting question. I am finding that I use LV a little more than I used to, mainly due to the flip out screen, but I'm still easily in the 90% EVF category.

FWIW since getting the R6 I'm increasingly using the EVF to review shots rather than looking at the rear LCD. This is partly due to eyesight issues (starting to really need glasses for reading distance but never carry them with me!) but also due to the return of the thumb joystick for panning the image around.

On that last point, does anybody know if there's a way to enable panning of review images in the EVF using the rear LCD - in much the same way as the rear LCD is used to move the AF point while composing in the EVF? If that's not possible and anybody from Canon  is seeing this, how about adding that in a firmware update?

Almost 100% EVF

Almost 100% EVF on the R & R5, because I paid for it. It has better resolution, not affected by bright light, more stable, and people give me more respect.

I also own a M6, which does not have an EVF.  In that case, it is 100% LCD screen.

BTW, the EVF is also Live View, i.e., electronic not an optical view.

Re: EVF vs Live View

For the R6 it is mostly EVF. I hadn't thought about it until I read this thread and now that I have given it some thought, I am a bit surprised by this change...and it isn't necessarily a desired one. I had been using the M5 pretty extensively and with the M5 I used Live View much more - maybe 75% of the time. The primary reason for this was because, on the M5, it takes zero time to tilt the screen upward whereas on the R6 I have to swing and rotate the screen to achieve the same position. The result is that, for me, the EVF has become more on convenient to use compared to live view the R6.

having used the flippy LCD at a low angel the other day with my R6  in sunlight and found it impossible to see the AF points only reinforced my decision  that i would never buy an enthusiast camera without a VF

Re: EVF vs Live View

I use the rear LCD panel much more than the EVF. I particularly like to compose, than touch where I want focus to be (and have it take the shot).

I was doing this previously on my 77d (using live view), so it seemed natural to do the same on the EOS R.

There is no separate Live View on the R5.  You mean viewing on the LCD vs using the EVF.  Both view what is coming off the sensor.  DSLR had two modes, one where you Thur the optical VF and the other where the mirror was moved up and you could see what was hitting the sensor directly (Live View).

One thing I like about the ML system is that I can see exactly what the sensor sees through the VF.  It means I can switch from stills to movies without taking the camera from my eye when using a long telephoto lens for which it would be really hard to view the LCD screen while hand holding.  Hence, I never use the LCD screen for shooting.
