hi

The 12-60 lens I have is a Lumix

Is there there significant different between that & the Leica 12-60?

I would say no. The Leica is a bit faster, i.e. f/2.8-4.0 compared to f/3.6-5.6 but otherwise the Lumix version is sharp and a good performer, lighter and shorter too.

A few other things not mentioned above (that I could see) re the difference between G9 vs G90:

Of course, none of these things may matter to you depending on how you use the camera.

I was trying out burst mode for a while as I was taking action shots so felt a bit annoyed that the RAW files were a bit lower in quality, but found that dealing with so many images in post processing was even more annoying. A better approach for me was to turn off the image review so I could just fire off a number of shots without needing burst.

The Lumix 12-60mm is a decent lens, generally thought to be one of the best kit lenses.

In the USA, if you are buying the G95 new, you can only buy it with the Lumix 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 as part of the kit.  While the G9 you can either buy it body only or with the Panasonic-Leica 12-60mm f/2.8-4 lens bundled.

To me, that makes no sense at all.  In general, I view the G95 as the successor to the G85.  It uses the same battery, grip, etc. as the G85, so a natural market would be people upgrading.  However unless you bought the G85 really early in its release cycle, you had to buy the Panasonic 12-60mm f/3.5-5.6 lens as part of the kit.  If they had offered the G95 body only, it would make more separation between the G95 and G9 cameras.

For example, when I bought my G85 3 years ago, I could have bought it body only for something like $800, and with the 12-60mm lens as a kit for $900 (which I went for).  A few months later, Panasonic removed the body only version, and you had to buy the lens.  At $100 difference, it is more of a no-brainer than if I had to buy the lens separately ($500).

Hello all

I appreciate all of your responses, wide range of experience & kind manner in how it's been shared..

This has been a real eye opener. I like to take photos & use software to create different effects. I came from the Canon world (mid range) & it's been real interesting.

I've received more information just posting the question than I could have imagined.

To my surprise, I think I've been able to understand a lot of what's been posted, yet there's so much more to be learned.

As you folks have shared the more in depth technical aspects of the 4/3rd world, I've come to better understand your comments that do include the phrase "depends upon what my use would be".

The amount of knowledge/experience plus your gear (albeit GAS) has been fascinating to learn about to say the least.

A long time ago, I had photos accepted in local shows, then I stopped learning. Time to start again.

Switching to 4/3rd has led me to see there's been a whole world yet to be learned regarding what to use-when or how to use & sell & update equipment.

I have to admit, I keep vacillating between the 9 & 95. Your interesting & informative replies has helped my learning process.

& I've learned, you folks have a lot of camera gear indeed. What to use & when to use it is the question.

"To each his own" is so appropriate here. I'm glad I found DPReview & this forum.

Feel free to continue your replies.

To be continued & thank you, Judy

One thing I find useful on the G9 that the  G90 doesnt have is AF Peaking . G90 only has M Focus Peaking it gives you a good idea of D o F..The top info plate is more useful than I thought it would be because it allows a quick settings check without having to use VF or Monitor, mind you I would swap it for a pop up flash.Another useful setting I dont know whether the G90 has is One touch AE, very useful if you use M mode a lot.

The G9's EVF is huge and works great, IMO. With that EVF andthe joystick for moving AF, I often shoot with the LCD closed, works fine for me.

Just get the larger accessory eyecup. They make ones for the G9, and the GX9, but I am not sure if they make one for the G90.

I have ones for all of my Panasonic bodies and they make a huge difference in EVF functionality, esp in bright sunlight.

I have the accessory eyecups for my GX7 and GX8 and like them a lot. The G9's eyecup is a different matter, though. Too wide, too curved. Photos and details here: https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4261593

Thanks for the post, I'm a left eye shooter so you've saved me from buying the ex eye cup.

The Panasonic Leica version is a better lens. And it is faster and probably has a better build quality and weather sealing. And it has a nine blade aperture rather than seven. But it costs more, weighs more, and requires larger filters.

But both lenses cover the exact same focal length, and both are very good. Both have OIS and both are weather sealed. I would be happy with either one.

If you go for the G9 you might be able to find a deal on one bundled with the Leica version. This lens has a $900 list price, so you will see how much you save with the bundle. It is also bundled with the Lumix version from some vendors.

If you go for the G95, it is rarely sold "body only" and is normally bundled with the Lumix version of the 12-60mm lens. I have never seen it bundled with the Leica version since the G9 is considered a flagship and the G95 a midrange camera.

Here's what I found on Amazon:

  • G9 body $1,098 , $998
  • G9 with Lumix 12-60mm bundled $1,198
  • G9 with Lumix 12-60mm purchased separately $1,498
  • G9 with Leica 12-60mm bundled $1,598
  • G9 with Leica 12-60mm purchased separately $1,898

With the G9, it looks like the Lumix would only cost $200 more with the body, but the Leica would cost $500 or $600 more. Either option represents a big savings off the $500 and $900 list prices for those lenses. Naturally, you would be nuts to buy the body and lens separately if you wanted both.

  • G95 with Lumix 12-60mm lens $998
  • 12-60mm Lumix alone $498
  • 12-60mm Leica alone $898

Good luck with your final decision.

I have both lenses and since you already have the lumiix i wouldn't recommend to 'upgrade' to the panaleica unless you really need the faster lens.

That said, the PL12-60 has better micro contrast and color rendition in respect to the lumix sibling.

Latter is certainly one little gem of the mft system, providing great coverage in an extremely portable form factor, that's very likeable, especially when paired with smaller camera bodies (gx80/gx9/pen series..).

It also fits well the larger bodies like the g9.

Hi Judy, I went through this same experience myself, and the advice found put me in favour of the G9 (body only), I had at that time and still do have the ever obliging G85. So after 6 months with the G9 the G85 was being used more as I found the G9 overkill and over weight for my usage. So G9 replaced by G90 body only and now after over a year I have no regrets.

This is just my personal actions, many disagree with my reasoning, but we are all individuals and have varying levels of equipment satisfaction.

So my recommendation is if price is no problem, and you get to try both G9 and G90 and find that either would suit you. Then contrary to what some may think I would say go with the G9.

Best of Luck with your final decision. They are both good cameras.

Re: G9 vs G90

OK Judy they are both good cameras, and hopefully you will find the G95 equal to your requirements, as did I. Much better for my style, my first tip which applies to most similar cameras, if on tripod you will get best results by turning stabilizing off. I have tested this myself and find it correct, especially when using video as it jitters somewhat. This is not just the G95 but most cameras using built in stabilizing. But for hand holding the stabilizing should be on.

Now enjoy your fresh tool and keep it fun.

Re: G9 vs G90

I have trouble with my glasses, being varifocal if I happen to use view finder and glasses slide into a changed position, well you can guess the rest. It does get tiresome so mostly I either remove glasses or have to refocus the evf. Not the fault of any camera.

Just have to grin and bear it. 😎

I can wear glasses when using the G90 and the FZ10002 without any issue. Just remember to adjust the diopter adjustment at the side if the EVF for image sharpness with your glasses on.

Exactly, it is the Varifocal Glasses that cause the problem, as when I use my reading glasses and adjust the camera for them I have no problem. But can't wear them for out side use, mainly for when using PC as I am long sighted. I need an upgraded me! 😎

It was deal, over a year ago as far as I remember.

The price has since gone up a bit.
