Minolta 200mm with 2x TC vs 500mm Reflex - Size and AF

Hello all, would anyone happen to have any real world comparisons between the 500 Reflex and a 2x TC 200mm?

If I'm correct the 2x would only be a F5.6 vs the 500's F8 and the AF would be better too?  How is the size between the two on an A99?

Surprisingly image quality is not the most important aspect of my project, just faster speed and size.

I'm very accustomed the the Reflex's drawbacks but would like some better AF performance.

I would go with the 500mm f8.

The 500 is fairly light and can be hand held. Try that with the 200 plus tc!

I have a Sony 70-200 and a Sony 2.0x and the 500mm.

both good and sharp.  Learn how to shoot the 500 and it’s really a fun lens.

and like everyone said, the 500 is super light and super travelable

The 500 reflex is 655 g while the 200/2.8 is just 790 g. With the 2xTC it weighs just 990 g. Not that much heavier.

I have - it's easy. Still weighs less with the 2xTC than a lot of lenses do.

I had the 500mm and liked it. The AF was fast if you were in the range, otherwise it can hunt. The DOF control is limited since it is fixed at f/8. You can only focus with Center Spot. The lighting can only be adjusted via shutter speed or ISO.

I have not used the X2, only the 1.4X (Minolta, Sony & Kenko). I thought the performance of the 1.4X was very good in terms of IQ, not much impact on AF speed with my 400mm and 600mm Minoltas. I have read some reviews of the X2 and it was determined that you are better off using a 1.4X and cropping.

I do. The 200 is the HS version and the 2x is an old Kenko TELEPLUS MC7.

If I'm correct the 2x would only be a F5.6 vs the 500's F8 and the AF would be better too?

That's right. With my A77, the 200+TC focuses faster. It also allows use of all the AF patterns while the 500 only works with the center point.

How is the size between the two on an A99?

The 200+TC is noticeably larger and heavier.

Surprisingly image quality is not the most important aspect of my project, just faster speed and size.

I'm very accustomed the the Reflex's drawbacks but would like some better AF performance.

There's also a significant difference in the angle of view, for both near and distant subjects, though that could vary with the specific TC.

The 500 has no visible CA. Can't say that about the 200+TC.

Those are all in-camera JPEGs, but I could process the ARWs later if that's important.

Thanks for that detailed comparison.  I wonder how much a difference the CA is on the Minolta branded TCs and realistically that isn't too bad given the harsh light.

Do you think you could take a picture of the two lens standing next to each other?  Just trying to get a visual on the size, thanks!

The 500 is 4 5/8 long, the 200 5 1/4 inches long. The 1.4X adds 3/4 inch.

Can't say for sure, but I assume they'd be better.

Here ya go:

The 200 is shown with its sliding hood collapsed, and the 500 is shown with its removable 'hood' removed.

If you’re gonna travel, the 500 hands down. It’s light and pretty small.   Just locked in at 500.  So just weigh how you’re gonna shoot.  Can’t go wrong either way

Yea I just stuck with my 500 Reflex after figuring out that my A7S' high ISO and LA-EA4 was more beneficial than the 200 + 2x.

Yeah I love my 70-200 g2 but man it’s heavy.  But the 500 is awesome for what it is, a compact 500 prime.
