R5: Please help me get closer to 20 fps

Hello, I have rented an EOS R5 with the RF 800 F/11 lens, and I'm trying to get as close to 20 fps as I can. The best I can do is around 16 fps. Based on my research, here are my current settings. If you can think of anything else I can try, please let me know.  Thanks so much!    (p.s. first time shooting Canon).

Canon RF 800 F/11 lens

  • Manual focus (physical lens switch)
  • Stabilizer off (physical lens switch)

Canon EOS R5 body

  • High Speed Continuous+ shooting mode
  • Manual shooting mode: 1/2000, F/11, 6400 ISO
  • Electronic shutter
  • Airplane mode on
  • Anti-flicker shooting Disabled
  • Recording RAW to CFexpress card (Sony tough card), and  L jpegs to SD card (ProGrade Digital UHS-II) .   I tried with SD card removed and it didn't help.

Try a lower ISO?  Maybe turn off any in camera NR?  How are you measuring the frame rate?

How do you know you got 16 fps? In Mechanical, that's not possible; in Elec., you always get 20 fps unless you let go of your finger quicker than a sec.

Are you using a fully charged battery?

Have you disabled WiFi?

In my testing the battery power doesn't matter for electronic shutter. I've shot it at close to 20 fps down to 5%. Look for other items that may be slowing the process down like Dual Pixel RAW.

Also, I remember a FM thread where someone reached out to Canon and Canon suggested the San Disk CFe card was too slow and buffered the shots too soon. So the camera was really capturing at 20 fps, but the buffering and slow writing didn't timestamp it until after the one second mark. His was a San Disk 256GB CFe. They mentioned something about it should be showing 99 in the shot buffer prior to starting the burst, but his was only showing 66. Check to see if you have a 66 buffer limit too.

They suggested shooting a phone's stopwacth app to confirm the shooting speed and not the file write speed.

Hi explummer,

The conditions for shooting at the maximum burst during high-speed continuous shooting can be found here - pan down for Electronic Shutter.  This was last updated in July, 2020, so there’s no mention of the RF 800 f/11.

I’m not sure where this takes you, but there you go...

Thanks all, for the replies!

To determine fps, I'm shooting my smartphone which is running an atomic clock app. The app shows an anaolog clock with a second hand that ticks the seconds rather than sweeps continuously.

Good news, I repeated my test with a few changes per your suggestions:

  • Fully charged battery
  • Lowered ISO (reduced from 6400 to 800. Which required me to change shutter speed from 1/2000 to 1/500).
  • Changed "High ISO Speed Noise Reduction" from Standard to Low (there is no "Off")

This time, I did get 20 fps. I'm not sure which of the changes were decisive. Maybe I'll play around some more to try to find out.

For those interested, here's the data from my most recent test. The columns are: clock second hand, first frame number, last frame number, and number of frames.

Re: R5: Please help me get closer to 20 fps

It will be the combination of battery and lower iso (thus less mb)
