I would add the XF10 to your comparison and just look at recent opinions, which are generally very positive if you avoid initial reviews. Tiny. I take my XE out everyday but still fancy an XF10 as it is miles ahead of my 12MP phone.

Slow focusing was the biggest complaint but I thought it was pretty good in the store the other day and it has 2m and 5m zone focusing modes to fall back on. The X100V they had overheated (they insisted it was normal) and the X Pro was too heavy.  Maybe an older XE and the XF10 is an option as it is so small and cheap that you can buy instead of a lens.

One thing that sticks in my mind is some people saying they always have it with them. Some even said it has replaced their quality ILC system. Half the price of the GR3 but everyone seems to say the IQ is on par. There was even a suggestion it could be the next cult camera (like the X70) if you can look past it not having the normal manual controls and Xtrans.

Is it better in the X100V?

I would try it first - this entire review isn't exactly confidence inspiring:

Which Fuji camera would be best for me? I need a small camera, but one that's made good, has controls and a fast lens (f2.8 or faster). The XE-3 and XE-4 with the 28mm f2.8 pancake seem to be options. The X100T and V seem like good options, too.

But what I'm really getting at is the age old adage that the best camera is the one you have with you. These days, that's usually my phone. But the problem is always the same. The camera that's small enough that it's always in my pocket never seems to be the camera I really want when it comes time to shoot. Not enough physical controls, slow lens, bad viewfinder, slow AF... Meanwhile the DSLR that does everything I want it to do and need it to do stays home in the kit bag.

The Ricoh GR cameras probably fit my needs closely. But they don't have ovf's or evf's. Just a screen. The newest one has lost it's flash and has poor battery life.

I want a viewfinder I cant look through. I also would like a built in flash (although that's less important).

If you don't know what to buy...buy nothing!  This reasoning can be applied to all aspects of your life!  Go for it!

Did you miss the start of my post where it says "just look at recent opinions, which are generally very positive if you avoid initial reviews"? i.e. opinions have changed. I could have worded it better but the point is anything newer than the initial reviews seems to be positive on YouTube. I assume firmware has helped.

Actually no, I saw what you wrote.  I posted the link to show what the issues were and to suggest that a potential owner might want to try it first to confirm they were improved rather than just go by reviews.

The X100V's EVF is a lot better than the XE4's.

It's frustrating these days because outside of large cities there are very few camera stores left. I'd probably have to drive 2-4 hours to get somewhere that I could actually pick up the cameras and try them out. When I bought my first dslr 15 years ago, I immediately eliminated a couple of contenders when I picked them up and tried them out.

Don't forget that renting cameras is also an option. It's not free like trying cameras out in a store, but it does give you several days using them for the kinds of photography you like to do.

KEH has a 14 day return policy, and since they sell used gear there isn't much difference to them as far as reselling your return. I've purchased several Like-New used cameras and lenses from them and its always been a great experience and a good way to save a little money.

Interesting camera, the XF10, but I don't think it has an evf does it?

No. And the initial complaints were terrible autofocus and lag. This is definitely one to try before buying. I just included as I was trying lots of Fuji cameras the other day and it really stood out for its size. It felt good in hand and focusing seemed good. Now that the initial disappointment has blown over this seems to be getting love from some people. Especially on YouTube.

Before buying I would need to make sure boost mode is on, get the focus beep on, update firmware and then really give it a good test. Including seeing if the rather restricted sounding zone focus mode would be appropriate to your style.

It sounds like it will be suitable now for more people than when it was released, but I would assume it’s still not ideal for many people. I just think it might be a powerful little tool for some of us who initially wrote it off. Leaf shutter is a nice bonus.

If you can handle 23mm then get the X100V

I'm starting to think it would be the best choice for me for what I want.

Re: Which X Body?

The XE-3 and 27mm pancake are cheap right now. I think I need to go on a road trip to an actual camera store and see if I can handle some cameras in person.

Its a great combo, the EVF isn't its strongest point though.

Try before you buy!
