What is the Rebel Model with the most focus points?

Thanks.

Astonished that the Canon EOS Rebel T7 has only nine?

Both the T7i and the T8i have 45 focus points.

Thanks.  Didn't realize the two models were so different.

Been 11 years since I bought a Canon DSLR. There used to be only one digital rebel at I time I believe. 300D, 350D, 400D .... 850D or KISS or XT, XTi, Xsi and then over to T2i, T3i

APS-C sensors and Canon's 9 point AF system with single centre crosspoint until about 10 years ago moving to 9 crosspoints (like 40D) and eventually the 45 crosspoint AF in the last few iterations.

To make it even more confusing, the line broke out in to T6i, T6s, T6, SL1 and today still highly fractured 77D, T8i, with the higher burst rates, another control dial like XXD, better AF and the more basic T7, SL3.

The Canon T7 (2000D) is greatly inferior to the Canon T7i (800D) camera (in many ways, not only just 9 points vs 45 points). Just google for a comparison. I'm using three Canon T7i (800D) cameras. That's sufficient, but the Canon T7 (2000D) is just missing too many things. In my opinion, it's better to spend a little more money to get a lot more features. I was tempted to get a Canon 90D or a even better camera, but this suffices for me after doing some research. I can always upgrade later. I'm also looking at the mirrorless cameras, but I'm not in a hurry to purchase one yet.

Thanks.  Very helpful.  Better to save up for the T7i.

Yes. Last year I bought two Canon T7i (800D) cameras for about $500 (USD) each on Ebay. This year they are about $100 more expensive (each). But they are not that much more than the Canon T7 (2000D) camera. But the price gap between the Canon 90D and Canon T7i (800D) is fairly large in comparison.

In what situations do you find the advantage of more focus points?

I haven't made a comparison between 9 points and 45 points and for that reason I can't say why one of better than the other. But with more focal points I'm better able to get pictures of flying birds such as the one I showed previously (and as shown below which is cropped slightly differently so it's not a duplicate picture). For these I use the 9 center AF points.

My main reason for choosing the Canon T7i (800D) over the Canon T7 (2000D) was much more than focal points. See the comparison on the internet. I would never buy a Canon T7 (2000D) camera.

Yes I understand that there are other reasons, I am just not sure how I would use more than the 9 points on my now ageing camera even for BIF such as yours where I might well still stick to single depending on whether the background  is clear, as in your shot, or otherwise eg with a bird flying over water.   Thus I don't get why extra points between the outer points and the centre point help.  Perhaps trying to pick out one individual in a crowd whilst maintaining an off-centre framing?

Re: What is the Rebel Model with the most focus points?

Yes, I believe that a person could change the nine center AF points to nine others on the left or right or top or bottom.  I just don't do it (so I can't say for sure), but that makes sense.  I upgraded from the Canon T3i (600D) to the Canon T7i (800D) cam, eras, so I don't know what intermediate steps Canon took for those AF point improvements on the Canon T4i (650D), Canon T5i (700D) or Canon T6i (750D) or Canon T6s (760D) cameras.  I just know what works well for me with the Canon T7i (800D) camera.  I can now get a lot more keepers when taking pictures of birds in flight.

OK, I got one my three Canon T7i (800D) cameras to see what other choices there were with the 45 AF points.  I could select three different sets of nine points on the left side, three different sets of nine points on the right side and three different sets of nine points in the center.  So, that's a total of nine choices.  But I just use the 9 center points (completely in the center).  That's why I didn't know without checking.

If it helps to explain...on the left side there are fifteen points, on the right side there are fifteen points and in the center there are fifteen points.  That's why we get nine multiple sets of choices of nine points.  Maybe there would be something on Youtube that would explain it better with a video.

Choosing blocks of 9 makes sense if framing is off-centre, maybe in sports or motor racing for instance.  Or a flock of birds and wanting to keep the front ones in focus.

Perhaps the OP can explain why it is of interest to him.  Whilst I might like more accurate focus points perhaps, I think if I had too many I'd just confuse myself

I think my 1D mkIII had 45 AF points but only 19 were actually selectable with the remaining 26 as assistive. My Olympus E-M1 mkii has 121 AF points which cover most of the capture area. While I like having them at the extremities,  I think if I could only select every 2nd point, it would be just fine. Looking at new Sony and Canon FF mirrorless, the amount of AF points is pretty nuts.
