Playing with Aperture to Create Unique Highlight Bokeh - A Fun DIY Project
5

Since I had a bit of free time at home, did a little fun DIY project manipulating the lens' aperture, to create unique 'highlight bokeh' (I made that term up. :D). It is nothing so serious, just the followings are needed.

  • a black (or any dark colour) paper
  • a pencil or a pen
  • scissor
  • craft paper punch (preferably)
  • some small light bulbs or a bulb string
  • a backdrop if you prefer
  • some objects like little dolls, action figures or fairies and some ornaments (as per your liking)
  • camera with lens
  • tripod (not compulsory)
  • lens filter
  • continuous lights or flashlights

Some circles needed to be cut to match with the size of the inner ring of the lens filter or the lens. And some preferred shapes to be cut inside them.

A scene can be set up using the dolls, action figures, fairies and ornament, as per the liking, to make the images more appealing.

Light bulbs or bulb string has to be placed bit behind the created scene to make it stay out of the depth of field when the scene is focused.

F-number to be set to the lowest (largest aperture) before shooting. Then let the fun begin.

The results would be like this.

If you do an online search for "shaped bokeh", you will find hundreds more examples.
