Canon Eos R vs Canon Eos R6

Hi everyone,

I have made another Question were i asked which system i should go with, since i plan to switch from my "old" 1DX to an new Mirrorless Camera. I decided to stick with Canon since i have some lenses wich i really like, and i can use all old glas with the new Cameras too!

Now i have a kinda bigger problem: The Canon Eos R is an intersting Camera in my opinion still now, but the R6 has some advanteges, which are still significant for me.
My question now is, if someone used both, what their opionon on the switch was, is it worth the Upgrad, etc.

For those who didn't read my prior thread (so probably no one here), here is what i use it for(text from old thread):

My usecase is, that i make Portrait like Pictures of Animal, and Humans. With that i like photographing Flowers, fow a local Shop, since there is always a verity of them there. If im not creating Photos for an Client, im usually making Landscape and these kind of Portraits.
So my Problem is that i can't really tell with wich one i sould get. One mayor factor is, for me atleast, is the prize to performance. Im Currently transforming Photgraphy to my mane Job, and i get "bigger" contracts here and there. My 1DX is fine, but the Problem is that i can't really shoot silent, and some of my prior clients said, that the pictures were find, and usable, but it would be nicer, if their were sharper, and with more Detail.
I think from the Information i wrote it is clear, why im debating between those two cameras.
My main consern with the R6 is that it maybe has some less Deatil then the R but it has a superior AF, and a Animal AF, which can be useful. On the other side the R6 is like 800-1000€ (956-1195$) more expeniv than the R.
I also know that there were some threads already, but they couldn't really help me. In the end its still going to be my decision, but i need help to figure out which one is the better choise, since both are really good.
Looking forward to your answers

I'd forget about IQ differences unless you frequently go to certain extremes in your photography. The extra MP of the R will only be seen in very large prints or extreme levels of cropping and then probably only at lower ISOs. The R6 has better high ISO but you'll only notice it at crazy 5 digit ISO values. The R6 has a tad more DR but again you'll only see it with extreme shadow pushes and still its a minor difference. I'd venture for most people 99.9% of their photos will be indistinguishable if shot with either camera.

So, assuming you don't regularly fall into one of those extreme use categories, it is about the body. In a nutshell it comes down to having IBIS, AF nubbin, improved AF (R is still very good) and an extra card slot vs saving money.

I got an R when it was on sale in Dec 19 and think it was worth every penny. There was no R6 so it was an easy decision. I'd say overall the R6 is a more mature camera. I'm in no rush to upgrade to it or the R5 myself and I do think the R5/6 are both a bit overpriced now as they are the first Canons with IBIS so initial demand is understandably high and allows for what otherwise would be considered optimistic pricing in comparison to other brands on the market.

Hope this helps.

Re: Canon Eos R vs Canon Eos R6

Hi, I switched recently to R6 (from R) and from my point of view I don't regret.
The R is good, but I was noticing lag in the EVF what makes some action photography a bit complicated and I was missing moments I wanted to catch.
This is much better with R6 but of course, light will be always faster than electronic in mirrorless.
I'm not missing 10 MPix extra from R, I think 20 MPix is enough if you are not planning make big crops...
Ant the animal/human eye AF is really great, even better/faster then with R (only human).

So yea, the DR was one thing i thought about since the R has an Lower one than the R6-. My problem is that i don't know what my clients do in the end with the Pictures, exept they order a print, so i kinda wanna go away from the risk of having a too low resolution.
I have a question to you? So you said you own the R, and like the R6 has this 120hz EVF (in the end it is slower bla bla bla) but how ist it, did the R also get somthing like the R6, or is it just the 60hz. Also how is the Display in general. I had the R once in my Hand, and the Sample had a bit of flickering. Is that a thing or was it just me imagining it?
thx for your reply btw

So you said that the R is a bit laggy somtimes. Is it managble to deal with, like i had to shot Dogs which ran thorugh areas with water, so that i can catch the water dropps.
Also i kinda have to Crop in sometimes, and when i crop i often go a bit hard on the crop, so the Objekt i wanna catch fills the frame.

The EVF in general is fantastic, but keep in mind I don't really shooting any fast moving subjects.  Honestly I have no idea of the refresh rates of either camera but they have similar specs otherwise.  I've owned quite a few mirrorless and the R is the definitely the best I have owned, but there are higher res VFs out there now on other generally more expensive cameras.  The 3.6 MP EVFs seem to be the point where they are very good even if there are now higher specified panels.  Besides resolution and refresh rates of EVFs the optics in them do matter and I find the R to be very clear with no noticeable distortion.  I'd expect the R6 to be similar.

I also switched to R and now to R6 and never looked back.

The body and experience shooting with the R6 is a completely different ballgame compared to R so I would recommend the R6.

+ IBIS

+ rotating dial on back

+ joystick

+ overal newer and better performance

+ shooting speed

+ dual cardslots

+ face recognition

- no top oled screen, although I use the finder to check settings a lot and actually prefer the rotating dial

- resolution could have been higher

Newer bodies are always slightly better (and more expensive), for me the only real difference is IBIS, everything else is marginal, I am sticking to R for now, my remedy is to get stabilized lenses.

I have been considering such a conundrum for a few days now, concerning the EOS 5D4, the EOS R, the EOS R5 and EOS R6

I am coming to the conclusion that better pixels, rather than more pixels is the way to go. I have a 5D3, so all the above have better pixels, but I think that the R6 has the best, as I have no real use for the 45mpx of the R5, along with its for me over the top video and huge cost, I like the idea of IBIS, as I do macro a lot and my lens has no IS. I have decide to buy a 100 macro with IS. This with the moveable screen and the superior AF and IS +IBIS should make macro more accurate and easier.

I also do some bird stuff with a 100-400 MK1 with IS. I could do with a bit more reach, so have decided to get a 1.4 converter, more pixels by proxy This should give an improvement on the present situation, with more pixels, better pixels, superior AF and superior IS. All hopefully at the cost of a R5.

I had considered quite seriously the R, but then there have been reports that some have noisy shutters. I hope no one come forward and says that the R6 also has a noisy shutter

Then again, tomorrow I might change my mind, perhaps even this evening

The Problem with that is that it is a nice lens sure, i thought about buying it, but i still have to deal with some problems. And Noice is one thing. The Shutter of the 1DX is not the quietest. So a new lens won't fix everything.

Maybe something like a 100mm f/2.8 L Macro would be more helpful?

Then again, tomorrow I might change my mind, perhaps even this evening

yea....
i sometimes wish i could just think about getting things, like the r5, but with my rather tight budget its just not an option for me

I do think about it, but do not want to do it. There are better ways to spend my money.

I have just been looking at the sample images of the R6. The ability to lift shadows by +5V is really excellent. not that I always want to do that

I bought my 5D3 in 2015, so the R6 would be fine

Good Pixels

PS If I did go this way, there would be no need to upgrade my 10 year old homebuilt PC. or Lightroom 6, Same size but much better files than the 5D3

The Problem with that is that it is a nice lens sure, i thought about buying it, but i still have to deal with some problems. And Noice is one thing. The Shutter of the 1DX is not the quietest. So a new lens won't fix everything.

Well R6 with electronic shutter is actually silent and the sensor is top notch for sure.  None of your lenses are extremely sharp so if the complaint is lack of sharpness then maybe the 100L might still be necessary.

So yea, the DR was one thing i thought about since the R has an Lower one than the R6-.

This is not true, unless you are shooting fast action with features that prohibit Dual Pixel RAW.  Without Dual Pixel RAW, the R6 has slightly better DR.  With it, the R pulls ahead.  R6 is not capable of Dual Pixel RAW, which adds a full stop of DR.
