Hood for Olympus 75mm 1.8

In addition to the Olympus OEM hood are there any other compatible hoods that are recommended?

I never use UV filter but all my lenses have hood and none comes in the box

I bought the much cheaper copy of the original hood made by JJC and can't complain, full metal construction, it holds on tight on the lens. The inner area is covered with cloth, which is a slight bummer because it attracts quite a bit of dust and is annoying to keep clean. Other than that however, I am satisfied with the cheaper copy.

Thank you. This looks a great suggestion and it is available in UK. Most of the threads are US based and I can't find any of the options!

I was looking for something, too - and found three options for 58mm threaded hood - two metal, one shorter, one longer, and one rubber - the rubber hoods can be nice as they protect - and take bumps while transferring none of the jarring from the bump to the lens. All three options I found on Amazon US. The two metal hoods would accept lens caps - but not the same size, nor the stock lens cap.

This shows the three options mentioned above.

The two metal hoods have no cloth inside - just matte grooved metal.

I too bought a JJC hood.  I've not actually handled the genuine Olympus version, but I don't see how it could be any better than the JJC copy.

I have the Vello LHO-LH61F. It has the fuzzy lining as well, but seems well made and approximates the finish of the silver lens. It can get marred/scratched, but it's a hood and I don't care. Reverses on the lens, so it can afford some protection while the lens is stored.

The finish is more of a champagne color than the lens; but again, I don't care. Some people do.

Here's a link to B&H for a description .

I would prefer one that does not screw on the lens if that makes sense and has a bayonet type or screw type. Am not actually sure you can fit a bayonet on the lens to be honest

I can appreciate that - it looks like the $60 stock hood uses a screw into the side of the lens. The options I considered use the front filter threads. Might be other options - be interesting to see what others suggest.

I observe this option. which seems to slide on, held by friction - on Amazon US:

KUVRD - Universal Lens Hood - Fits 99% of Lenses, Holds 99% of Circular Filters, Fits 54mm-76mm, Single - (Small)

There is no bayonet fitting on the lens.  You either have one that clamps on the lens barrel, or one that uses the filter thread.

So the screw on the side is really the only option

Another JJC satisfied user - it's nicely made, metal, and mimics the OEM's odd friction screw attachment versus the more typical bayonet. Very deep and does a fine job keeping sun off the front element.

Cheers,

Rick

I played around with a few flexable rubber hoods until i found one fairly deep. I removed the threads from it and it stretches snugly over the barrel and stays put. It even doubles back on itself to make a cushioned shock absorber when not needed as a shade. Previous to that i was using an aftermarket hood from the oly  40- 150mm F4.0-5.6 R Zoom, shimmed with black duct tape to create a friction fit..  Yes I'm a miser.

Yes, at least if you don't want to use the filter thread. As I said I have the JJC copy of the hood since a few years now and can't complain, there are no scratches on the barrel and the hood attaches as tight as possible. When I change lenses, I always grab the 75mm by the hood and rotate it to either remove or attach the lens to the camera, the hood stays on and doesn't even move the slightest bit.

As for the lenst cap, I replaced the default Olympus one with a cheap, generic center-pinch cap you can find  pretty much everywhere.

JJC Hood for Olympus 75mm 1.8

I bought my 75mm used and it came with the JJC hood. I normally avoid third party accessories when possible, but in this case the hood is decent quality and nicely matches the lens.

I like that the hood is reversable but rarely use that mode for storage, I prefer to just leave it in place. The lens itself isn't all that large to begin with and not much bigger with the hood.

I quite often store the lens face down with the hood in place without a lenscap in a divided Domke or Tamrac case. I've not noticed any objectionable dust accumulation on the front element, even though there might be a bit on the inner surface of the hood. Maybe that's as intended ?

I was actually talking about the soft, inner fabric of the hood itself rather than the actual front element el the lens.

It's not hat bad though and maybe I brought up a con which isn't really problem, to my knowledge, the genuine Olympus version also has some fabric material on the inside. I'd buy the JJC again without second thoughts if I'd ever lost it, simply a good quality product at a reasonable price.
