Best Fujifilm X body for manual focus lenses?

I wonder which Fuji X system body - no matter whether old or new - is the best for quick & precise manual focusing. I'm shooting a lot with adapted and native manual focus lenses such as vintage rangefinder lenses and contemporary lenses by 7artisans & TTartisan, and typically wide open (so that zone focusing is not an option).

The criteria for the best manual focusing camera would be:
(a) quick selection/moving of the focus point +
(b) quick viewfinder magnification/electronic zoom
...with focus peaking as an added bonus.

So far, I've used the X-T4, X-E1, X-T200 and X100T which all have their specific advantages and limitations for manual focusing:

- With modern bodies such as the X-T4 and the X-T200, it is of course the easiest to select the focus point via touchscreen and hit focus magnification (in Fuji terminology: focus check) on the assigned button. However, I find that manual focusing via the EVF is more precise, but unlike other brands [Sony...] Fujifilm cameras don't have functions for touchscreen focus point selection while using the EVF, unless I've been missing something.

On modern cameras, focus point selection therefore needs to be done with the joystick/focus lever, which is slower (since you can't select a focus point right away, but need to move the focus square with the joystick). Oddly enough, the cheap/plastic X-T200 has an advantage here over the X-T4 because it has an option to perform focus check/magnification by pressing in the focus lever/joystick. This means that one can do all focus operation with a single knob, while the X-T4 requires to alter between two knobs (joystick + pressing back dial for focus magnification).

- The X-T4, and as I understand the whole X-T1/2/3/4 series, has the Dual Display setting for manual focus, which I think is a mixed blessing. On the one hand, it obsoletes manual focus check punch-in, on the other hand, having only a tiny part of the display in 1:1 magnification makes it harder/less comfortable to manually focus.

- With the X-E1 (and, it seems, the X-E2 and early X-A cameras), focus point selection is a bit convoluted, because you first need to press a selector button to activate focus point selection mode, then use the 4 arrow selector buttons to move the focus point, and then punch in by pressing the rear dial.

- I find focus point selection most efficient on the X100T where there's a setup option to skip activation of focus point selection and use the four selector buttons right away to move focus points. This is IMHO faster and haptically better than the joystick/focus lever of the newer cameras, and of course works perfectly in combination with using the EVF.

So I wonder: is there any Fujifilm X body that allows direct focus point selection via the four selector buttons, in combination with focus check/magnification in the EVF?

Or any other clever/efficient/painless way of quickly moving the focus point and checking focus via a punch-in magnification in the EVF?

(As said, it doesn't matter whether the body which does it best is old or new. Personally, I wish I could just have my X100T with an interchangeable lens mount for this purpose.)

I'm not sure if you're opposed to using a camera body with an OVF, but I really enjoy using the X-pro2 with manual lenses. You can set the OVF to be the correct field of view for the lens, and at the same time you can have the little EVF in the right hand corner be any three levels of magnification with peaking. I've found using that to be the quickest way to frame things up while walking around and still get mostly everything in focus. Of course if I really want to make sure I nail a shot or I'm in low light I'll switch to the evf, but It's a really nice option to have because it takes out having to press the magnification button all the time.

Sounds intruiging - but how do you select the focus point on the camera? (As far as I understand the camera's online manual, you're forced to use the joystick/lever for that?)

yeah you have to use the joystick.

You can enable full-time focus point selection with any of the d-pad equipped bodies by going to WRENCH>BUTTON/DIAL SETTING>SELECTOR BUTTON SETTING> and select FOCUS AREA.

...but in doing so you lose the custom setting functionality of all four d-pad buttons. I have the bottom d-pad button set to enable FOCUS AREA on my X-T20, one extra click, but it works fine for me and I don't lose the other three customizable buttons (and the DISP/BACK button returns the focus point to the center).

Thanks a lot for this,  overlooked this option in the labyrinth of the XT-4's menu configuration. - WIth the X-E series, I checked online manuals, and it turns out this option is available for the X-E2 only (the X-E1 doesn't have the option, the later models no longer have the d-pad).

Any X-Tx model is best for manual focus lenses because it they have the largest magnification EVF and can enable dual screen mode so you don't need to magnify every time you need precise focus. FYI, peaking will not give you precise focus. My opinion would be to get an older X-T1 or X-T2. X-T2 for easier focus point selection.  If you want a camera with IBIS, get the X-H1.

Re: Best Fujifilm X body for manual focus lenses?

I'm also quite intrigued in this subject. I've had an X-E1 and X-E2, for about 4 years, and recently traded up to an X-Pro 2. I only shoot manual vintage lenses with my Fuji cameras. And have always used the punch-in option because it has been the most accurate way to focus. So I will need to try out some of the advice I've read so far.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure how well the OVF works with adopted vintage lenses. I've read that it's not really a good option, but hope this is not the case.

I know that Fuji wants to sell their AF lenses, but I wish they made it easier for those of us that want to shoot manual focus lenses only.

The OVF has some issues that I can not stand when used with manual focus lenses. First, while the ERF makes the OVF somewhat useful, especially compared to the X-Pro1 (no ERF), there are still issues with Parallax. Because the camera can't know the focus distance with non native Fuji lenses, it cannot compensate for parallax. This mean that the bright frame will be off, as well as the focus point for ERF purposes (unless shot close to or at infinity).

And I say this as I love the X-Pro line. They are great cameras, but are not meant to be used with manual focus lenses. The X-Ex line cameras will be much better in this regard because of the accuracy of the EVF, if a RF style camera is necessary.

I know that Fuji wants to sell their AF lenses, but I wish they made it easier for those of us that want to shoot manual focus lenses only.

I would recommend X-H1. It gets you the big, higher resolution EVF, focus joystick and IBIS which I find is a great advantage when manually focusing.

Of course if price is no concern the X-T4 offers all of this as well.

If I didn't have 3 cameras how would I take pictures of my 2 cameras?
