How many people having lockups have the RF 100-500?

Please to shoot the questioner. I have not read all of the posts, but I noticed everyone of the people reporting lockups over the last two weeks have the RF 100-500.

All of the more recent people posting they don't have lock-up (like myself) do not have a RF100-500 listed in their gear list.

I am not saying this is the cause, I am just looking for patterns. Maybe we could start a liked on line document that people experiencing lockup could describe the lockup and mode and list the gear they are using. We might be able to find a pattern.

Re: How frequently your Canon EOS R5 has locked up?

Here is an update to my prior post  (https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/4621975#forum-post-65888276)

I was out photographing eagles again today for 2-3 hours. After some time, I began to realize that the freezes seemed happen when using Animal eye focus back button auto focus, IS on the lens being turned ON and writing to the CFExpress card, not the SD card.

I used the same Canon R5/ RF 100-500/ RF 1.4 extender set up that I described in my post above. I stared with two fresh LP-E6NH batteries in the grip and took some 2800 images. The first 2200 images were on a 128GB Delkin Black CF Express card which I low-level formatted before leaving home. I used this card in Alaska earlier this year for thousands of images with no issues. (Also with the R5 with FW 1.40 and an adapted EF 100-400 II lens)

I had 10-12 freezes. The image in the viewfinder froze and the LCD went grey. This time, instead of turning the camera off then on, I tried holding down the shutter release. If I held it down for ten seconds or so, the camera made sort of a clunk that I felt as much as heard, then the LCD blacked out momentarily, and the camera started working again.

I never got a freeze when I was using the Large Zone AF: Horizontal autofocusing zone (which I use for birds in flight against a clear sky). When I was at shutter speeds over 1/2000 second I usually turn the lens IS off. I don’t remember getting a freeze with the IS off. Finally when my CFExpress card was full and the camera switched to the SDHC card, I don’t remember getting any freezes there (590 images). I tried experimenting to confirm these observations, but I ran out of card space.

By the way I never had a freeze with the R6 (firmware 1.50) under the same conditions (IS on, Animal eye focus, etc.) over some 1600 images.

p.s. I’m not sure what I am going to do with this information, but perhaps someone can find it interesting.

Possibly, but I have the RF 100-500 which I haven't had long enough to take  over about 1000 photos. But also, I've had no problems and no lockups with it.

I haven't really dealt with the gear list. At least with me it's not a useful tool to figure out what I use.

I am not saying this is the cause, I am just looking for patterns. Maybe we could start a liked on line document that people experiencing lockup could describe the lockup and mode and list the gear they are using. We might be able to find a pattern.

My personal opinion having used  5 Canons of various kinds over 21 years is that memory cards and batteries are capable of faults that cause issues with the cameras. It makes me work hard to learn who is using which devices before I jump into it. It may not be their issue if they have a problem but as the requirements become stricter and more demanding it seems logical that cutting corners is an issue.

I use the shutter button. I have not been able to get in the habit of using the back button. I always use both cards. CF for RAW and SD for jpg. I have not had one lockup and have been shooting a lot since March when I bought my R5.  I  also never use a grip (I don't like them). I don't have a 100-500 right now, but hope to get one this Spring.

I had a lock up last week with the R5 FW 1.4 and EF 500mm f/4 mk2, OEM battery, fully charged and Prograde Cobalt 325GB CFE and OEM RF to EF adapter.

It seems there are a few experiencing lockups, so is it worth those that have reveal the memory cards they were using when the lockups happened? Perhaps making a new post, where those that have had lockups listing the memory cards in use at the time.

Hi Phil,

Zero lockups with f/w 1.5 (3,000 plus shots) lenses - RF 24-105 f/4 L, RF 70-200 f/2.8 L, EF 100-400 II L (Control Ring EF-RF Adapter), Sandisk Extreme PRO 300 SD, Integral CFexpress, Canon EP-6N/ EP6NH Batteries. AF very responsive and very sticky - a real pleasure to use.

Maybe I’m just lucky? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Phil

Likewise no lockups, EF 24-70 f2.8 MkII, EF 16-35 f2.8 MKIII both used with the Canon adapter. RF 100-500, RF 600 f11, Canon EP6NH and Rav Power EP6N equivalent. Sony Tough CFEXPRESS 256Gb and Kingston Canvas React+ 256Gb V90 SD. Love it to bits 😬

Thinking about other things I do/ don't do - I shoot using the front shutter button (not BBF), I very rarely use Electronic Shutter, so usually either Mechanical or EFCS, I very rarely use H+, so generally use either High/ Low-speed continuous, or the Self-timer. I shoot full raw.

My standard set-up at present (subject to 'as required' live tweaking) is:

Manual Mode, Auto ISO (occasionally user defined), Expand AF area, Servo or One-Shot AF, Evaluative, Low-speed continuous shooting. (General walk-around for shooting 'stuff').

C1 Manual Mode, Auto ISO (occasionally user defined), 'L'+Tracking Animal detect with Eye-AF Enabled, Servo AF, Partial, High-speed shooting (occasionally switch to H+).

C2 Manual Mode, Auto ISO (occasionally user defined), 'L'+Tracking Human detect with Eye-AF Enabled, SERVO or One-Shot AF, Partial (alt. Evaluative), Low-speed shooting.

C3 Tv Mode, Expand AF area (Alt. 1-point), One-Shot AF, Evaluative (alt. Partial), Self-timer.

I have M-Fn set to 'Switch to Custom Mode' so I can cycle between Current Mode-C1-C2-C3.

[SET]: 'Dial Function' (EC, Drive, ISO, Metering), [AF-ON]: 'Centre F. Point', Lens/ Ad Ring: 'EC'.

All modes have Continuous Focus Disabled and 'Lens drive when AF impossible' set to 'ON'.

I usually have the screen parked/ reversed when shooting (unless shooting at odd angles).

Firmware 1.5.

I'm not sure that takes things any further, but there you go - zero lock-ups with this set-up.

(So far... )

Phil

I use eye detect on the shutter, with a standard AF box non eye detect on the back button. This is so that if the camera fails to AF with eye detect I can just use standard AF to get focus. The number of times I use BBF is very minimal if hardly at all.

Interesting observation - worthy of further investigation.

Re: How frequently your Canon EOS R5 has locked up?

I have been running onto this lockup issue recently. I noticed today that I shot through my LP-E6NH battery with no issues, and then I switched to a LP-E6 from my old 7D.  It locked up about 1 out of every 50 photos.  I will try and replicate this, and I hope this is my issue.

I am using an R5 with 100-500 with 1.4 TC and back button focus.  I am running the latest firmware.  Things seem to have gotten worse with my camera around the time they added the ability to track vehicles.

I am not a professional, but if I was shooting weddings I would be looking for another brand that is more reliable.

Ever since the latest two firmware updates, mine hasn't locked up once. Before that, it'd do it every so often.
