How frequently your Canon EOS R5 has locked up?
4

In the lights of the lockup / freeze events that some people experience with their Canon EOS R5 cameras, I would like to call on any members who own and shoot on a regular basis with their R5s for some feedback.

Please share if you experienced any freeze or lockups with the camera that required you to power-cycle in order to get it back running.

Any additional information as the firmware version and recording media type would be highly appreciated.

If your issue was resolved please also share your experience and how the issue was fixed.
Best,
KG

Zero lock ups.

15000 plus shots and about 8 hours of video.

  • Day 1 release camera. Serial #in the 900's
  • Only use RF glassalways
  • Official Canon batteries only
  • 128GB Sony CFexpress card
  • 64GB Sony SD card
  • Firmware updated to 1.2
  • All RF glass firmware updated

I remain convinced that the issues are related to media and I hope the next firmware resolves the issues that some users are having.

Mine locked up 2 times back in November when I first got it. Did the firmware update to 1.2 and it never did it since no matter what I've done. Guess that's a good sign. Can't wait for the next firmware update to insure even more reliability.

Name the gear and I've probably owned it and used it.

I rented a R5 for a week and during that time I found that it locked up very often with one of my lenses (an early copy of the EF 500mm f/4L IS USM).  After experimenting I discovered that if I turned off the IS the lock-ups pretty much went away.  With my other lenses the R5 locked up a total of four times.

So far my R5 has locked up 3 times. It seems to happen once every second shoot (or roughly once per 2000 photos taken). It seem to freeze when transferring data after a photo is taken... so hopefully this issue can be addressed with a firmware fix like others have suggested?

Which firmware version you have been experiencing the lockups with?

Re: How frequently your Canon EOS R5 has locked up?

Only when I used older 3rd-party batteries. Not once with OEM batteries. I also can't say what effect, if any, the Viltrox EF-R2 adapter had. But with OEM batteries and the same Viltrox adapter I had no lock ups.

I also get errors with a very old 2x TC Quantaray adapter but only if I do bursts, and it locks up much less with bursts with the Canon RF to EF adapter.

Re: How frequently your Canon EOS R5 has locked up?

I have shot more than 13,000 photos with the R5 and experienced no lockups. I have used only Canon LP-E6NH and LP-E6N batteries.

I could make sense that a battery that can't handle peak power draw could cause malfunction. It would help if users who have experienced lockups would say if those occurred while using third-party batteries.

And yourself?

My R5’s been OK so far (rolled the shot counter twice).

Mainly shooting action (birds, sports), using H+ and/or electronic shutter.

100-500L +/- 1.4x TC, and 24-105L mostly.

OEM batts, Sony Tough CFe.

Lockup’s for me with genuine Canon batteries.

I only used the R5 with the original battery it shipped with and a new LP-E6N that my 90d shipped with.

I had a couple of lockups after the purchase in October, but after the firmware update they were gone, thousands of shots, no issues.

I've only shot with R5 for a period of 5 days on a rental R5 with RF 24-105/4L IS, the original LP-E6NH battery and firmware version 1.2.0. Used together with 256GB Lexar 1667x SDXC V60 card. During the 5 days I did around 2100 shots and I experienced two lockups. Not very encouraging especially given that I am shooting landscapes and the workflow is not like shooting birds at 20fps.

I am still waiting to see if there would be a new announcement by the end of March for a potential R5S before buying into Canon again.

I've been a Canon only user for decades until the end of 2019 when I decided to pull the trigger and got Sony A7R4, FE 16-35/2.8 GM, FE 24-70/2.8 GM and FE 70-200/2.8 GM OSS to be used alongside my Canon gear mostly due to the dynamic range and low light inferiority of my 5DSR.

Two days ago I sent all my Sony gear to Adorama - to cut the story short, I don't like Sony colors, I don't like the body ergonomics, FE 24-70/2.8 GM is total disappointment, I don't like the sun bursts of any of the Sony lenses above, they also have terrible flare. Menus are difficult to adjust to, especially when switching back and forth between my 5DSR and the Sony. And of course I get truly frustrated when I can't do anything in the menu while the camera is flushing its buffer to the memory card. I understand all the pros of the Sony system but it's just not for me so I decided to end this sad love story and get a Canon mirrorless, but I feel a bit discouraged by the ongoing issues.

Was the lens firmware also updated? When the R5 came out Canon released a firmware update for the RF 24-105L to make it work with the R5 IBIS.

Never locked up in regular shooting. Not once. Used the Canon Connect app recently, however, and it locked up on almost every shot. Will have to try it again and see if there problem persists. On latest firmware.

Good question, unfortunately I didn't note the firmware version of the lens.

Interesting. So far this pole is inline with others I have seen. About 1 in 4 people have experienced at least one lockup with their R5. Surely these sort of numbers will force Canon to officially address this issue?

Well, we don't know how representative it is of all R5s out there. I bet that most R5 users don't frequent these kinds of forums. Maybe it's less than 1% of all R5s sold.

This is true, I guess we will never know the total number of R5’s affected. It’s definitely still affecting quite a few people though, including myself and a few of my friends that own the camera. I have my fingers crossed for a firmware fix in the next update... the idea of sending my camera away to have the mother board replaced is a bit daunting...

No lock ups so far after 3 months.

R5 came with firmware 1.2. I'm using Samsung and Sandisk cards and OEM and non OEM batteries.
