Impressed with the metering on the R
2

We had some friends over yesterday for socially-distanced drinks on our back patio. They arrived before sunset, but stayed until long after dark. Once it was dark, the only lighting was from our small propane outdoor heater at ground level, and some Christmas lights on the wall (seen in one of the photos). I wanted the photos to look like it actually looked. With many previous cameras, I would have had to dial in a lot of negative exposure compensation to stop the camera artificially brightening the background, but with the R I only dialed in 1/3 stop for some, and none for others. The evaluative metering does a great job of picking the right exposure for whatever is under the focus point. Here's one showing the tiny lights on the wall, with no exposure compensation:

And here are a couple of the other couple, lit mainly by the fire, with -1/3 compensation:

This is exactly how they looked at this point (more than 30 minutes after sunset). I am very pleased with how easy it is to get the exposure exactly how I want it. With earlier cameras, I would have had to dial in a lot more negative compensation, or mess with spot metering.

As the length of a thread approaches 150, the probability that someone will make the obvious "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" remark approaches 1.
