Do you use DeepPrime with the default setting 40? Would DenoiseAI be still necessary if you used DeepPrime at its maximum 100 setting?

yes if your image is very noisy. no if not

You can download a free trial version of PhotoLab 4 - which includes all the features, even those like DeepPRIME that are exclusive to the Elite version - and test for yourself.

I used to dial down PRIME from 40 to 30 because, as a former film shooter, I don't mind a little noise and I find a perfectly smooth image "plasticky". I've been happy with DeepPRIME at 40, but I haven't really tested different settings on a variety of images.

I'm quite impressed with Deep Prime. On my PC it's significantly faster than Topaz DeNoise AI and definitely seems to do a better job with the high ISO images I've tested.

Topaz can create really clean files, and integrates nicely with my Lightroom workflow, but it can create odd artefacts that are noticeable when pixel peeping. I always have to tweak the DeNoise AI settings to get results I can live with, while DxO does the job well with one click.

If I hadn't already paid for Topaz then I probably wouldn't bother after trying DxO 4.

That said, running Topaz DeNoise at a very low setting after first processing the image in Deep Prime does a good job of smoothing out grainy backgrounds.

Here's an example:

Deep Prime only:

Deep Prime + DeNoise AI at the lowest setting:

Interesting that the tone/contrast seems a bit different even though it's just been run through Topaz DeNoise. I assume it must do more than just reduce noise and sharpen?

i just want to know if a typical windows 10 intel i7 laptop user will see a big improvement in DeepPrime processing time after switching to an M1 mac mini, thanks

I wouldn't say that using DeNoise AI is actually necessary even at lower settings. Sure, there's still grain in the background with a 6400 ISO shot, but in my opinion it's not really an issue at normal print/viewing sizes.

Anyway, here's the same shot with Deep Prime at 75:

and 100:

It's definitely clean with the maximum Deep Prime noise reduction applied, but to my pixel peeping eye it's starting to lose detail and get an unnaturally smoothed look in places.

Deepprime makes topaz denoise completely redundant. In some cases though, I've got even better results by setting luminance to 0 in deepprime and then applying topaz SHARPEN. It does a good job removing the fine grain left and enhancing the details.

I gave that a try, but it didn't work at all for me, at least with the test image I've been using.

Here it is processed with Deep Prime at 0 and maximum noise suppression in Topaz Sharpen AI:

There's still a lot of grain left that'd be instantly wiped away by DeNoise AI.

I really need to take some more high ISO shots for testing this, rather than just posting the same bird over and over again.

I guess I'm mainly a good light shooter with my M43 kit. I had to dig back over a year to find one shot that taken at ISO 6400. A lot of my noisiest shots either used my old Fuji kit or a smartphone, and neither open in DxO.

You got a lot more noise than what I've seen so far. Color noise too, which is unusual for any to be left after deepprime processing, even at zero setting. I guess you could try a higher setting in deepprime, then process with topaz sharpen.
