16-55mm f2.8 or 24-105mm f4 for A6600

Ok i think i have narrowed my decision down to these 2 lens as a first lens for the A6600. I like the 24-105mm for the fact if i switch to full frame but I also like the 16.55mm as that on an apc sensor is like a 24-70 ish 2.8mm which I like but if i move to a full frame it would work as a crop so not sure. Some of the reviews on the 24-105 were so-so and I was not really happy with the Canon version of the is 24-105 range.

So what do you all think? I probably over thinking this....

Acc. my opinion, buying FF lens just because you can switch in the future is nonsense. Field of view is different, you will loose wide end completely with 24-105. Just buy the right tool for your machine...

Sony 16-55 is a great lens, if you have budget for it, instant buy. Cheaper alternative is new Tamron 17-70f2.8.

Both are quite good lenses.  What can be a "problem" with using a "full frame" mid-range zoom starting at 24 to 28mm or so is that when the "crap factor" is applied, the "wide end" isn't so wide.  The 16mm acts as a 24mm but a 24mm acts as a 36mm and the 28mm, a 42mm.  It's less practical and use and might push one towards needing a wider lens as well.

You could also consider the Tamron 17-70/2.8 which would have the same focal range on aps-c as the 24-105/4 does on ff.

I think this is an excellent option if you feel there is a good chance of moving to full frame in the very near future.

If, however, you feel that is a year+ away, then I would recommend the APSC-built lens. You may well find that if you do decide to go full frame eventually, you want to keep the A6600+APSC lens as a second body anyway.

Question is why would somebody buy apsc camera, when want to buy FF in near future. Why not to buy FF right now?

If you do not have an A6600 yet, think again what you really want. Think about size as well. The A6600 with 16-55 versus an A7c or A7iii with 24-105. Both options will have comparable low light capabilities, but are rather different in size and the prime lens selection for them is very different as well. I'm happy with my Sigma 30/1.4 on A6500, but some of the Samyang/Rokinon AF lenses (such as their 18/2.8 and perhaps the 45/1.8) are better suited to FF.

Getting an A6600 to trade it in a year later seems like a waste of money however. Choose once, and choose carefully.

Re: 16-55mm f2.8 or 24-105mm f4 for A6600

I am getting a used a6600. It has a very good auto focus on it from what I read. I am trading a extra body (apc sensor) Nikon that I really dont use. I wanted to try the auto focus on the Sony without putting a ton of money into it. What holds me back from buying the 16-55 is the cost. I havent found one used yet so... The lenses for my full frame Nikon are f4/f2.8.  I am not sure that the Nikon z auto focus is as good yet. I like the Sony for the animal eye focus.

The A6100 and A6400 have the same AF as the A6600, except some small detail (I think it is "animal eye AF in video" but correct me if I'm wrong.)

You might as well try an A6100 with kit lens 'to taste the system'.

Re: 16-55mm f2.8 or 24-105mm f4 for A6600

It might be difficult to find either the 16-55/2.8 or 17-70/2.8 used.  One is "coming soon" brand new and the other is pricey enough that I'd think buyers would have given it some thought before purchase.  I have several lenses for my A6400 but haven't got either of the 2.8s nor have I done anything that was intentionally  pressing to test the autofocus. It's a complicated enough system that getting the camera set up and selecting the proper settings takes some time and study.  I don't recall any focus issues that were not likely my fault.  The only really moving items I've tried tracking, so to speak, were some fire trucks, close in fire fighting helicopters and a massive steam locomotive.  All big and rather slow moving, all things considered.

I would buy the Tamron 17-70/2.8.  I personally haven't used it, but my two Tamron FF zooms are outstanding.  Otherwise the 16-55/2.8.

Also i wouldn't get the 24-105 on FF unless you really need 24mm.  The Tamron 28-200 matches it optically, offers a meaningfully faster aperture on the wide and and has more reach.  I just picked this lens up myself and it's hard to believe that a superzoom can actually be a good performer optically.

Re: 16-55mm f2.8 or 24-105mm f4 for A6600

If you have near future plans to buy a full frame body I would not invest heavily on crop only sensor glass.

If the 24-105 is an option then I would get the 24-105 so you dont lose $500 or so on the 16-55 when you go to sell it paying more money to get what you wanted in this what if

F 2.8 to F 4 does not matter for 1 stop depending what you are doing and your needs.  If you have a specialty need I suggest a prime lens.

To that end might as well buy a full frame version of the 16-55 if you need 24 to xxx

Just do those numbers to figure out equivalence.

I would also advise if you are spending $1400 on the A6600 it is only $300 more for the A7 iii then the 24-105 is a no brainier.

***

If you must have a crop sensor camera and that is all you want and you have no plans for full frame. I would then tell you to look at the Fuji X system.

I shoot Sony and a Leica Q2 and in the past owned and sold the A6500

Depends what you want BUT make your money work for you is what I try to do.

Despite my mostly used cameras are 6400 and 6000, I still recommend buying an A7c otlr A7 III
