Olympus E-PM2 and El Gato Cam Link
1

I have an Oly EMP2 and a new El Gato Cam link 4K (a dongle that lets you send live HDMI out from the camera to a PC through a usb connection, where it can work as if it were a webcam) and I can't really get it to work (the cam link works fine on my OMD E-M10 2). Does anyone have any experience using this combo?

I know that the EMP2 is considered pretty old so maybe it's a lost cause.

When everything is hooked up using a working cable on a compatible PC, the El Gato software ("4K Capture Utility") *is* able to connect to the camera, and I'm able to see and dial through menu functions (BUT oddly most menu items are greyed out) and the battery indicator. I can view images recorded on the sd card. But when trying to view any live images all I get is a black screen with a "no picture" icon.

Importantly, the motorized lens shuts down once I plug in the hdmi cable into the camera's output. This happens even if the other end of the cable, to the computer and camlink, isn't plugged it.*  I've tried using a non-motorized and non-electronic lens and it doesn't make any difference.

I've tried switching the HDMI output on the camera from 1080 to 720, toggled the "HDMI control" setting and didn't see any results. The El Gato software displays the video resolution correctly when making these changes too.

Since the lens shuts down it seems pretty unlikely that it'll work, BUT  given that the software can talk to the camera and get the menu and even read the resolution the camera is set to (1080 and 720), I'm hoping there might actually be a resolution. I've also heard of other situations where the lens will just turn itself off and maybe someone that has a solution for that can recommend it here and it will work in this particular case too.

* Just for reference, the lens shutting down is similar to what happens when plugging in a usb cable. The EMP2 has a few USB options: Auto, Storage, MTP, and Print. I tried each of these options, restarting the camera each time, and it made no difference except that Print and Storage gave a 'no signal' message in the el gato software, like when no camera is connected, and they also made the lens turn on and extend itself like normal but then switch back off and stay off)

That camera has HDMI only to preview existing images, not for live view.
