Canon EOS M3 Ring Flash
1

I hope someone can help me....

I have a Canon EOS M3 and Im looking for a ring flash for dental photography. I have a suitable 105mm Macro lens but my budget does not currently stretch to the Canon branded ring flashes. I hope can recommend a non canon, compatible ring flash which will suit my needs for now?

I bought a Neewer ring flash but I don’t think it is compatible. The camera is not giving me the option to enable the flash and on selecting external flash settings it says the flash is not powered on or is not compatible.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Probably not suitable for your current budget and probably you know already, but just for mentioning, Canon EF-M 28/3.5 macro lens has built-in ring light and is affordable and has high optical quality.

I have a Nissin MF-18 Ring Flash.  I do not know if there are compatibility issues with any of the M bodies.  I have used it with a few different Canon bodies, but I haven't tried it on my M6II.  Nissin's compatibility chart is hit and miss on camera models but I don't see any M's listed.  Compatibility would be the only concern I would have in recommending it.  It is a remarkable piece of equipment.  It probably offers a lot more adjustability and control than your application requires, but it is cheaper than the Canon products (but still pretty expensive).  Nissin makes good quality products.  If I get a chance tomorrow, I will test it on my M6II and let you know if I find any issues.

I ran my Nissin through some quick tests on the M6II and found no compatibility issues.  It exposed perfectly in TTL mode.  It fired in manual mode.  What that means for your camera is inconclusive, but at least we know that it is compatible with some M bodies.
