T7i with a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5,6 IS USM

OK I am thinking about updating my EOS Elan (yes, don't laugh I still have it) with the T7i. I have the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5,6 IS USM lens still which I used with the Elan. I understand it will still work on the T7i. Do you folks think this lens still is respectful for talking nature shots and Birds, ect... I read that the 70-300 zoom has pretty bad sharpness, but I have a feeling that was a different 70-300 than the one I have.

Thanks All!

Bob

It would probably work OK. For me, 300mm FL is a little short for wildlife. I'm using a 150-600mm FL lens. But it can be too heavy for some people. If it were me, I would take chance and just get the Canon T7i (800D) camera and experiment some. Then if it didn't work out as well as you had hoped, just get another lens.

Here's a sample picture at 600mm FL and ISO6400 with the Canon T7i (800D) camera.

Yes that is a great shot! That lens looks awesome but for now, after spending the money on the T7i body. I'll try using my 75-300. I was just hoping it is the good lens and not the lens with the bad sharpening as I read somewhere.

Are you using the 70-300 or the 75-300; two very different lenses in IQ?

For birds, 300 mm is usually fine for waterfowl and raptors, but you need to get quite close to capture any detail on smaller birds.

Ahh good catch, my mistake. It is the above 70-300mm IS USM lens, not the 75-300. Sorry about that confusion I created with the typo. The one I put in the thread subject is the lens I have. I charged up my Elan battery and took some shots with the lens and it seems to work great still. LOL I have no way to download the photos with the old CF card, my card reader was in an old computer. LOO wow that is a big CF card. Been a while. Good to see the lens still works.

I haven't owned this lens since a 20D but I remember it being pretty sharp stopped by 1 stop.

The problem is the AF motor, and by extension, the AF is not that fast.
