Good workout lens

This lens is old enough for a bar mitzvah. It's held up well despite a Version II coming out. It weighs a ton and curiously does not give me a 1.5X crop on my a77 II. I was hoping for it to be the 36-105mm gap between the Sony 16 50mm f/2.8 and the Minolta APO 80-200mm f/2.8 lenses. Oh well. It still delivers incredible photographs and works really well for video with its SSM. Just prepare yourself to have tired arms at the end of the day.

Its a fabulous lens, well worth troubling with the heft!

Not really understanding ... why not?

Re: Good workout lens

Every other full frame lens I've used has yielded an effective 1.5X focal length increase. This one doesn't.

I agree the SAL 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA SSM is a wonderful lens. My last usage of that lens was about 1 1/2 years ago for a wedding.

I am 77 years old now which is not so old but my strength is not what it used to be so I sadly parted with my heavy 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA and 16-35mm f/2.8 ZA and several other FF ZA primes (it was emotionally had to do because of their performance and pride in ownership).

I migrated to lighter weight / smaller Sony equipment in effort to keep my photography passion alive.

Enjoy your 24-70mm f/2.8 ZA.

I suggest you check the coverage. The lens optics can't change and your sensor size is smaller than FF so the field of view captured by the APS sensor is necessarily smaller than on FF.

Crop isn't an effect of the lens used but the sensor it's used on, so there's absolutely no chance that you didn't get the 1.5x crop factor using that lens on an APS-C body!

I had both. Across the frame, the 24-70 is as sharp or maybe even sharper than the 16-50 in terms of line pairs per mm.

So your pixels are as sharp as 16-50 but you get more of them.

On a 24 megapixel APS-C vs 24 megapixel FF, given similar sensor performance, the 16-50 could be slightly better because you don't need to stop it down as much to get the same depth of field.

I love mine ...

I have largely switched to E mount but I still love this lens with the LAEA3 adaptor on my A7Riv. I haven't felt the need to have a native E mount lens in this category.

Both seem to have fairly high sample variation. I would choose them based on your focal range preference. The 16-50 is an SSM II lens as far as focus tracking.

This. Mine is tack sharp. I wanted to replace it with the SSM II version, but a cursory comparison showed that the II that I bought was obviously inferior to the one I already owned.

SSM II is better, but especially for tele lenses. The standard focal lengths don't benefit as much because you're not really using them for tracking.
