XD5 film advance winds continuously but shutter never cocks

Just acquired an XD-5. nClearly needs new light seals, but otherwise looks acceptable for its age.

With new batteries the view finder lights appear to be functioning correctly.

The film take up spool is in two pieces, but otherwise the winder lever appears to work normally and the film feed cogs and spool mount post turn normally.

But the shutter never cocks and and you can keep operating the lever indefinitely. No sensation of anything catching and freeing or of any engagement with anything.

You can feel two pressures on the shutter button quite clearly.

Anyone got any idea what this might be? XDs which cock but don't release seem to be two a penny; trust me to pick one that apparently uniquely does the opposite.

Or do I just cut my losses and either sell/break it for spares or keep it myself to break for spares if needed for the XD I hope to own?

Thanks for any guidance.

Sounds like one of the bit's inside has got bunged up with lack of use , dried out lubricant and lack of use .

A good internal cleaning would sort it out .

For what they are selling for now , it might be worth checking out on how much a CLA would cost .

You'd get back a good as new camera .

Buy another old camera without a service , and how long before it needs work ?

Junking it or ripping it apart for spares just takes another camera that will never be replaced out of existence .

If you can't be bothered getting it fixed , sell it on as is , declaring the fault , and let someone else repair it .

Re: XD5 film advance winds continuously but shutter never cocks

Please disregard post. Problem resolved itself.

I've been treating the camera gently as befits an article of its age, and winding on slowly. I must have got irritated demonstrating the problem to someone this morning and operated the advance lever twice rapidly in quick succession. On the third demonstration of the fault the lever wouldn't wind on. I pressed the shutter release and just heard it release very quietly.

It has to have been either the very fast repeat that somehow caused cogs to engage, or that old grease softened in what is a rather overheated room.

Now to put a test film through it!

I'd read these shutters were quiet, but that simply didn't prepare me for how quiet they really are.

Possibly the film advance release (button on the base of the camera) remained engaged.
