My response here is to Craig.   But for a new UW photog, these are the issues that frequently present themselves - the distraction of framing the subject while getting exposure right can put everything else out of mind, particularly for the majority of us that only get to do it a week or three per year.    Muscle memory with the camera outside of the housing doesn't translate well.   Add it the impact of narcosis if you're past 70 feet or so and it can be a lot.   Buddy feedback/monitoring can be helpful initially.   Pool time where you just work the controls is also beneficial.

. But I do know to rely on my gauges and dive computer to tell me what’s going on.

if you see a very engaging octopus or yawning frogfish, will you remember to look at them?   It is very easy to feel comfortable and overconfident here.

I don’t actually use strobes. I’m also not sure a typical dive shop, where you dive with maybe 5 other people and one or two instructors, would want to accommodate me bringing such equipment with me.

If you're not going to use strobes, you could probably save yourself a huge amount of money and effort and just get the latest gopro and the red filter set from Backscatter.    Though even with those, my wife has two 2000 lumen lights attached.    You can cheat a bit and just slap on a 4000 lumen light, or just plan to get the first strobe soon, but aside from blue water wide angle, you need lighting.

To repeat Craig's point, the 6 pack is the boat you want to be on.   If you're part of a DM guided group of 12, half your subjects will run off or hide.    Even with 6, you'll want to be slightly apart from the group.

I thought RX 100 bodies remains unchanged for years.

I had this RX100 4 Meikon housing..And of course older metallic RX 1000 III housing.

Seafrog is another Meikon product line.

Many if my buddies changed to Olympus TG compact cameras.

And I saw it for myself - more than once.  My late wife started with a weak ear, and she ripped it for the 4th time doing exactly what you describe.   I saw her re-rip that ear 6 times, and every time it came back weaker to the point she just couldn't dive again.

[That's very good, if you actually do use them wisely.]

No kidding.  Especially if at some depth where you use air quickly.

It's been my experience that I'm soon trailing the group, trying to keep up, and shooting out on the periphery.

Some of the reasons why I keep going back to Roatan over and over come up here.  Like knowing where you are in terms of the dive profile.  I've been there so much with the same divemaster that I know how the dive is going in general.  Plus the divemaster knows exactly how I dive, and how I shoot for that matter.

And a huge reason is that 75% of the dives there, I'm the only diver on the boat.  Book in the off-season.

That is incorrect. There are some similarities between different generations, but there are significant differences as well. The pop-up flash moved around, the flash hot-shoe got replaced by a pop-up EVF, buttons moved slightly, and of course there are different lenses between I-II, III-V and VI-VII. The long lens on the last two models requires an interchangeable port housing to utilize in full.

Since you arent using strobes right now.  Take a look at the Kraken Ring Light 3000 WSR.  If you like that kind of light I will sell you my copy.  Its pretty cool, it can be used as a constant light but it can also be used as a "strobe". Ive upgraded so i havent used mine in forever.
