RF 70-200 f4 issue?

I just got the RF 7-200mm f4 lens an I noticed that the internal element that also holds the diaphragm is moving all over the place. My initial thought is that might be normal for IS operations but again, the movement is quite large.

Can anyone else that has the lens confirm/infirm?

Thanks.

San

Its the same with both the RF70-200/2.8 and the RF100-500 and a so far non issue... They decided not to park the IS elements.

Re: RF 70-200 f4 issue?

To be fair, I only had it for a day or so and can't give a proper and fair characterization. But first impressions: very sharp, light , fast to focus and balances well with R5.

The noise the internal OIS elements are making are a bit disconcerting (but not a real problem, according to  others in these forums).

Re: RF 70-200 f4 issue?

I received my lens today and also noticed the same internal piece moving. I called Canon support and he had me upload a video. The individual I spoke to wasn't sure if it was normal or not so he sent out an email to find out and it appears that's how the lens is built. Seems different to me but I'll probably get used to it.

Just to confirm, I did the same and got same answer (Canada). He also said I can return it for service if I want. Will use it for awhile before I decide on that.

I was in touch with Cannon Support today. Below is the email I received back from them reassuring me that the “rattle” is part of the design.

Thank you for contacting Canon. My name is Jacob and I would be happy to help you troubleshoot the lens rattle issue you're experiencing with your new RF 70-200mm F4 L IS USM lens.

When the lens is not in use, the image stabilizer motor will disengage, and it will sit loosely inside the lens barrel. This is part of the design of the lens. If you were to wiggle or give the lens a slight shake, you will see some slight movement inside the lens and you may possibly hear it rattle. Once the lens is mounted on to the camera body and the camera is turned on, the stabilizer motor will engage and lock the lens components.

The rattle will be more pronounced if the lens is removed from the camera body before the camera is entirely shut down, so to minimize the sound you are hearing you can let the lens element re-seat into a resting position by powering the camera off and waiting at least five seconds before removing the lens.

The lens and camera have been designed with hardware and sensors to detect issues with each item. In case the lens happens to malfunction, the camera will provide an error code, usually Error 01. If you do not get the error, then everything is working as intended.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance.

Re: RF 70-200 f4 issue?

All of my RF lenses seem to have a little more rattle than their EF counterparts. I assume that is normal.

Can someone comment on the video IS at 200mm

I saw a review online complaining about the image stabilization of the lens at 200m. It looked pretty bad. But he reckoned it could be because his copy had a problem

Re: RF 70-200 f4 issue?

The EF 100mm 2.8 Macro IS has the same type of floating element. As it's one of the few lenses with this is seems weird and like something is loose but that's how it is.

Re: RF 70-200 f4 issue?

Hey same here I just ordered two R6's and this was one of the lenses I got with the cameras I'm having the same issue as soon as I took it out of the box I heard it go clunk on the inside waiting on my camera to charge to see if the internal stabilization fixes it? If you have any updates on this let me know.

It’s normal.  Look at the images in Dustin Abbot’s review, you can see it clearly there, though he doesn’t mention it.   My copy is exactly the same.

Re: RF 70-200 f4 issue?

In EF lenses they had a mechanism to lock the IS element in place when powered down (and most 3rd party lens manufactures do the same). It baffles me they stopped doing that now. Probably a cost saving measure.
