Thanks from Fuji W3 user

Someone here suggested that I would be able to view my Fuji W3 3D images on a 3D TV, so I gave it a trial.  I tried it two ways - direct from the W3's SD card in my 3D TV (Panasonic 50"), and via an HDMI cable from the camera.

SD card route - Only the still images worked - the video file format wasn't recognised.  HDMI cable from W3 camera worked for both still images, and the video clips, complete with sound.

Occasionally where I'd shot close-ups of flowers and similar, the image tried to get very close to me, and caused eye discomfort*, but overall it was great, and removes the disappointment I had when the local 3D printing service ceased shortly after buying the camera in 2013.

*Fixable I guess using the separation control on the camera.

So, thanks a lot for the enjoyment.

How did you find the quality of the video?  It has been reported to be low but video is lower pixel count anyway.  Did you try side-by-side LR separate images and then use a stereo viewer?  I think it might work well on a smart phone.  I have been doing 3D stills but I'm interested in adding 3D video without a special TV or using special glasses.

OK for my purposes - trains, buildings and similar

No.

I have been doing 3D stills but I'm interested in adding 3D video without a special TV or using special glasses.

In the UK, 3D HDTVs were very popular around 8-10 years ago - now, it seems to be 4K, and I do have two 4K capable video cameras, but as yet no 4K capable display.  I bought my 50" Panasonic TV 8 years ago, and quickly added a 3D Panasonic Blu-ray player, plus extra 3D specs.  I have the TV quite close, and I can easily see the difference between HD, and the standard definition used by 90% of the channels.

For a very short time, I could find enjoyable (to me) 3D Blu-ray DVDs, then I'd seen them all.  To me, "Avatar" was a waste of time, and I'm not looking forward to the eventual release of Avatar 2 or whatever.  I enjoyed the 3D "Alice" videos, but then I have the book.

Re: Thanks from Fuji W3 user

Thank you for your response.  I'm still in the process of researching the video aspect of 3D and I lean toward the traditional parallel L/R view.  I think home video, played back on a smart phone or tablet with the proper viewer set up would make for some very nice 3D video.  I have a stereo Realist camera that my dad got in the 1950's and I was hoping someone had made a digital back for it, but no such luck.  I did video production as a job at a university and now that I'm retired I would like to try good 3D video production, but on a budget!  Thanks again!

You might want to try this camera. It can be found on ebay and Amazon. It does side-by-side 3D, which is actually very good. This example is anaglyph from a video loaded to youtube. There is editing software for SBS video out there, I can direct you too. I do not have one of these cameras, but I do have the Sony TD10, which is more sophisticated, but I am impressed by this video and the prices for this camera. It's about the only cheap one out there now that is still easy to find.

This video is from 2012. (223) [3D] My First Tutorial Review of DXG-5F9V HD 3D Camcorder - YouTube

You can pick these up for around $150 or less these days.

Except Sony smartphones with 4K screen resolution, all others will give you less than FHD resolution/eye in parallel mode and 16/9 format.

For good 3D quality video experience you will need at least a Dream Glass 4K device with Black Out Shade, or other dedicated 3D devices.
