There is always something to shoot/snap, you just have to know how to do it and have the right gear.

Yes, although the effective f/8 aperture may not AF very well depending on which camera it is on.

That’s what I thought because at the time, I had decided to go for the f2.8 model because of that.

And for the OP, my f2.8 + 2x still rocks!

I had considered it, but the image quality at 2x was too much of a compromise for my use, which is why I got the 100-400:

The the f/2.8 was also a bit too big/heavy/expensive for me to lug into the bush when canoeing and hiking around. Glad to see you putting it to good use!

Just to say thanks all for your help.

He opted for the EF 70-300 IS USM in the end, the extra length clinched it along with being an EF as he is likely to upgrade the body to full frame in future - plus a very local shop had it for a good price (always good to shop local) and will guarantee we get it in time.
