a1 is great, full of features, but a lot of I do not need, such as all the connection ports and 8K. The current a9II $4500. There is a gap of $2000 between the 2. I hope a9III will be under $5000 and with  bird eye tracking , and speed and 50mp of the a1. Finger crossed

I don't see why there wouldn't be eventually, but it was a bit early for one to be announced today. It's still less than a year old I think?

Isnt the Alpha 1 essentially an A9ii with a 50MP sensor and 8K video?

I can see an A9iii coming, but I doubt it would have the 50MP sensor of the Alpha 1.

I'm pretty sure it will happen, simply because Sony wants to cover different price ranges:

Talking about FF, in USD:

1) sub 2000

2) 2000 - 3000

3) 3000 - 4000

4) 4000 - 5000

5) 5000 - 7000

Something like that, the number of divisions doesn't really matter, but they need to cover different price ranges for sure, to be able to sell to as many potential buyers as possible.

There are people like you or me, who would love to have an A1 but think it's a bit overkill and of course a bit too expensive, and would would be very happy to buy a ~$4500 model with lower specs, like 30-36MP, 30fps, only 4k video, and the same AF, menus, and electronic shutter that works with anti-flickering + flash.

That would be great!

I'll take all the other features like 30fps at just 24MP... works for me

Well, I do hope they keep the a9 line - a1 too pricey for me - though pretty much my perfect camera. Hell, even the a9 ii is too pricey for me. I only got the a9 less than a year ago cause it finally dropped to "expensive, but not too expensive"

What it mainly has that I want is the increased res at high speed, which makes me think the a9 line may not go up in res - and I would ideally want about 36mpx. Now though, I think it is going to be stuck at 24mpx, but I really hope not.

Happy with 20 fps. And if they want to keep the a1 distinctive, they likely won't give a9 the same speed, so think a9 will stick with 20 fps.

My guess is that the A9 line will fade away, and that we get feature filled cameras with less professional communication features in the 7 line. But of cause, this is pure guessing.

I'm curious about the buffer+card performance of the A1.

The A9 and A9II are great for sports because you can take 20fps for a LONG time.

With the A1 (uncompressed) you get 20fps but with 50mp it'll only last you for ca. 3 seconds.

So combined with the newer cards what does that mean for real life use? How many seconds can you take pictures for?

That's what is interesting, because 30fps and 20fps is great, especially at 50mp but sometimes you need/want to go well over 10 seconds.

I am not shure about this LONG time, since mostly pretty short bursts are taken. Eles you might shoot video. With 4K and 8K you can grab individual frames ans still have data for pretty large print.

With the A1 (uncompressed) you get 20fps but with 50mp it'll only last you for ca. 3 seconds.

Buffer: 400 jpg files and 238 RAW files, from the specifications given, but yet no info about how fast the buffer will clear.

I am not so sure about this claim.

I think I have read about ca. 82 raw files (uncompressed raw that is)?

I mean if you can shoot 3 seconds and it needs maybe 1-2 seconds until you are ready to shoot again (not for 3 seconds and 20fps of course, just being able to shoot some) and wait for 5-10 seconds and you're good to go again for 20fps 3 second burst that would be alright I guess.

But shooting for 3s 20fps and then waiting 30 seconds until you are good to go might be an obstacle for some sportshooting (that you don't have with the A9/II).

And I must confess it happens more often than not that I use up a lot of the 20fps action when shooting dancing or sport.

As the one series seems to be the merge between the 9 and the R lines, I guess the A9iii will have the new AF tracking systems @30fps and the 1/400th for flash sync, but clearly it will be less than 50Mpx probably around 30Mpx.

I don't see any reason why Sony would stop the lines R and 9 that are selling well. This one line won't sell much in comparison.
