Unable to save a URL from Safari

I tried to save a URL from within Google and elsewhere and it won't work. Rather than a https:// full link, I see a concealed link or a very long line of text.

For example searching for "flower pots" appear like this instead of the URL:

Flower pots & planters - IKEAhttps://www.ikea.com › Products › Decoration

One of the links I had previously saved now redirects to another link and I wanted the full URL:

Ditch the pots, use soil blocks! | Chelsea Green Publishinghttps://www.chelseagreen.com › ditch-the-pots-use-soil-...

Sorry, but I'm unclear what you're trying to do. Safari doesn't have a "Save URL" command. The URLs are there just hidden in text.

If in a Google search page I use the contextual menu to "Copy Link" it works as expected, and just copies the URL, not the text it is hidden within.

If I just highlight text and command-C I get something different.

But if you paste a URL here it will often hide the URL, so it depends on what you're doing with the text/html you copied.

That's Google. All their URLs returned in search results are obfuscated with Google analytics. You will have to visit the web page to copy its bonafide URL. This is why I use StartPage as my default search engine.

Isn't that what right-click Copy Link does?

BTW, what are the advantages of using Safari?

For those who don't already know, Startpage isn't a search engine. . . It is a privacy-oriented service that provides anonymous Internet searches with no tracking, profiling and personal data collection for sharing/selling, as well as other features.

The search engine Startpage actually uses is Google. Startpage pays Google for access. Startpage can be set as the default search engine on your Mac.

I used Copy Link and the text I copied is obfuscated.

Flower pots & planters - IKEAhttps://www.ikea.com › Products › Decoration

I copied the above link and the URL was hidden.

Copying the link into the Location Bar from Google:

You can extract the actual link out of that, if you try hard enough.

https://www.ikea.com/sg/en/cat/flower-pots-planters-pp004

You need something which parses URLs and extracts the url= parameter. I have no idea what would do that automatically.

For my second link, the preview, what I wanted, is different from the clicked link.

This is the url

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwi_w4_TobLuAhXR7XMBHQ05B3IQFjAAegQIAhAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.chelseagreen.com%2F2020%2Fditch-the-pots-use-soil-blocks%2F&usg=AOvVaw3ZcahowoW-eR1drYxGb3fv

If you extract the url from the url= parameter (up to the next &), and then translate the % escapes, you get:

https://www.chelseagreen.com/2020/ditch-the-pots-use-soil-blocks/

Thanks!

Random link from Yahoo

I tried to do a Copy Link from Yahoo and it can be the same, although not always.

My search.yahoo.com results look like Google's.

To to your Safari Preferences and go to the last tab. Advanced.

be sure "show full website addresses" is checked. This may be the problem.

However, if you're going to Google or some page and right clicking on a link it will probably only save the full HTML which has the link name "Cameras" like below.

Cameras

instead of the full link

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiDsuTfj7fuAhWJKs0KHdWOCpUQjBAwAXoECAIQAQ&url=https://www.dpreview.com/products/cameras&usg=AOvVaw1p8XzmnPwnvlpc1o55ZzPE

you would have to go into the full link and copy out what you really wanted

Safari and Firefox were the browsers which were colour managed. I haven't kept up with the new browser developments.

Apple is all about privacy these days so they are really pushing security as a the main reason to use Safari. However, every browser company will tell you that their browser is more secure and private than their competitors.

The biggest advantage is if you live in an apple only ecosystem. Handoff from device to device 'just works' along with syncing history, bookmarks, reading list and passwords across all of your apple devices via iCloud.

Personally, I use Chrome on Windows - more out of habit than anything, but I prefer Safari on the Mac and iOS. It just feels snappier.

Yes, Yahoo search results are also obfuscated with analytics. That is, anti-privacy.

I haven't used Yahoo search in years because it's pretty bad. Bing is better than Google sometimes but not often.

As I said above, StartPage is a solution. Maybe it is not a "search engine" by full definition, but I would call it a search engine. True StartPage do not have its own bots to crawl the web - they get indexes from Google - but it functions as a search engine, with results similar to Google but not as complete.

Safari didn't add the outer Google URL wrapper in an attempt to hide things from you.  Safari was just showing you the URL that Google had given to it.

Google

Copying the link into the Location Bar from Google:

https:// www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiY65ybjbPuAhXaT30KHaQNBgUQFjADegQIGxAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ikea.com%2Fsg%2Fen%2Fcat%2Fflower-pots-planters-pp004%2F&usg=AOvVaw1bHSMF2qhKw04MV9i-VXXz

That's the URL that Safari saw.  It's a Google URL.  Its purpose is not to hide the Ikea site, but to cause your browser to trigger Google analytics on the way there.  The "%3A" and "%2F" sequences in the "url=" text appear to be simple escapes for ":" and "/", there not to obfuscate the nested URL, but to keep ":" and "/" from interfering with parsing.

Google doesn't add URL wrappers to all of their search results, but they do seem to do this to most or all of the results from a Shopping search.  It seems likely that merchants pay to be included in Shopping searches, but want to pay based on the number of click-throughs, not simply on the number of times they show up in displayed lists.
