You'll probably be fine without an update. Make sure your camera runs the latest firmware

Re: SEL18 135 Firmware

Sony cameras don’t need firmware for the lenses in 99% of situations.  I’ve read that Sony has the instructions for the camera in the firmware of the lens.  So whenever you put a lens on a camera it knows how to make it work

That's correct. All that the camera firmware updates seem to do for new lenses is to turn off the option to produce uncorrected JPEGs.  Sony only does this for heavily distorting lenses, where it would be embarrassed if customers realised just how much distortion and vignetting was being corrected in-camera.

All E-mount cameras,  from the NEX-7 onwards,  have automatic lens correction based on data provided by the lens. Even the original 2010 kit lenses provide correction data, so the system was designed into the lens mount right from the beginning, even though the original NEX-3 and NEX-5 cameras didn't do the correction.

You don't need to download anything. The lens will work just fine on the old camera, with automatic lens geometry correction working. The lens provides the correction data to the camera, without the camera needing to be updated or told anything about the lens.

Lenses can have firmware updates, but it's seldom needed or provided. When it is, it's for an older lens to work optimally on a newer camera which might have additional autofocus features that the lens can't implement without a firmware update. Generally, it's to get faster AF, but isn't often needed, particularly not with newer lenses.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated. Its working. I had a 18 105 on it but the smaller size, lighter weight and extra zoom attracted me to the 18 135. Just need to be able to travel again.
