Hi Isabella,

There is only a handful of professional UW-photographers, i.e. people who make their living from making photos UW, on this planet. Seems not to be a big business and likely it is very competitive since there are many who would be willing to do so...

As far as I know, these professionals use FF cameras (Nikon, Canon, eventually Sony top models) housed in Alu housings (Seacam, Subal, Nauticam etc...) with the appropriate lenses, (dome)ports etc...

I heared one saying that despite he is not convinced that the ultra-high Megapixels really make superior IQ, he prefers in these days to take his D850 over D4, because he believes the higher Megapixel images are more future proof and he hopes to sell them also further away in the future...

Re: DSLR Underwater Rig

this will always be a moving target.

The eye focus feature in the R5 works to a degree on fish.   That and 45 MP will drive many there.   Plenty of happy 810/850 and A7III/IV users out there as well.

The lenses and the ports matter more than the camera body.   Pick a camera system and a housing system and go from there.

Re: DSLR Underwater Rig

Mirrorless works well doesn’t need to be a dslr. If you are using live view and the screen I find it easier to compose and safer as you can see what is going on around you. And whether you use auto or manual focus depends on what you are doing as well.

Russell Ord uses a medium format Fuji so it comes down to what you have/like.

what you can’t skimp on is a decent housing, else you will regret it when you get flooded out.

I was asking about housing. Each camera ha its own housing?

Re: DSLR Underwater Rig

Yep they will have different housings. If the button layout changes between the models then a  new housing is needed usually.

Re: DSLR Underwater Rig

Most housings are specific to a camera model, or at most a few very closely related ones, because they have mechanical linkages to the camera buttons, and thus need to match the layout of the camera controls.

EasyDive in Italy makes universal housings that accept a wide variety of camera models by using electronic controls - the housing buttons and knobs operate electronic switches, and the housing controls the camera inside it through a USB cable. Support for newer cameras is added by firmware updates from the manufacturer. This allows them to support just about every camera out these with just a handful of models, differing mostly in overall size.

Let’s talk “serious” UW photographers, in addition to “professionals”. Until about 5 years ago, there were only DSLRs in use,  mainly Nikon and Canon. Then Sony pioneered quality mirrorless, recently joined by Canon, with Nikon a distant third. Olympus cameras are also in use, but are fading away as Olympus has exited camera manufacturing. All of these brands make quality equipment with Nikons and Canons more in use. DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have separate, interchangeable lenses. You need an underwater housing designed to match the specific layout of the camera controls, which varies between manufacturers and usually between models of a manufacturer. In addition, you need a port to mount on the front of the housing, and each lens typically requires a port unique to that lens and make of housing. This is why you often see complete used systems for sale. If you upgrade to a Sony a7r4, for example, you need a new housing to match the button layout and body dimensions  which differ from those of the a7r3.

there are good plastic housings (Ikelite) but aluminum is more favored (Nauticam, Sea and Sea, etc.). The housing can cost as much as th3 camera body, and then there are ports.

A focus light and dual strobes also are important. Inon and Sea and Sea are two of the more popular brands.

there’re lots of threads and alternate opinions here and other boards.

hope this helps.

There simply isn't one that's significantly more popular than the others, and it probably changes every 2-4 years anyway with new camera introductions.  Add to that DX and FX formats - which have huge ramifications for lens options and size variances - and there just ... isn't.

And you throw in the "/" there - stills and video can be quite different in terms of equipment needed, unless you mean a hybrid doing both.

Also, your question could be interpreted as 'which housing...' rather than camera.   There too, it varies.

Can you be more specific in what you are looking for in an answer?

Re: DSLR Underwater Rig

I believe that if you are using mobile for underwater photography then Sony is the best brand that I have used. Not sure about cameras though.

Re: DSLR Underwater Rig

If you're asking about the housing brand then you can't go past Nauticam.

If you're asking about the entire setup then that's a much wider question.

I work as an underwater photographer, and know many. We take photos of customers and typically use RX100, A6500, GX7 in all variants of housings, with single or dual YS-D2J or Inon Z-330 strobes. If you're talking about fine art underwater photography then the camera choice is similar to above water choices, with a nauticam housing, a WWL-1 wet lens or similar, with video lights strobes to suit.

As with most photography, it's not the equipment, but the skill of the operator that is the biggest factor.
