Picked Up a Z5 Last Week
4

I had decided I needed a Z model in my little group of KM cameras. I had been reading about the series and I discovered many people back in the day preferred the Z5. I found this for real cheap and it's in great condition except for one broken tab in the battery door. It still holds the batteries in, though, but I just need to be careful closing it.

I am amazed at how quick and quiet this camera is. I can't hear the zoom or autofocus motor at all. The zoom function is ultra smooth and fast. I wish all the bridge cameras I have had this kind of performance. I did notice that it tended to underexpose in bright light. And there is a little PF on the long end of the zoom. I'll have to read up on how to get rid of that in either GIMP or DarkTable.

Just some snaps....

I bought mine in 2006. I did a lot of shooting with it at the time, and still pull it out of the drawer occasionally and take a few shots.

The sounds are there, but they're subtle.

Yep.

And there is a little PF on the long end of the zoom.

There's quite a bit of CA with mine at the long end (and barrel distortion at the wide end). Mostly correctable.

Nice colors, though. Overall, it does an acceptable job in good light at moderate focal lengths.

There's also a dedicated 0.75x wideangle kit, which is pretty good: the ZCW-300 and the ZCA-300 adapter for it. If that interests you, send me a PM. I have two sets here.

I probably won't get the camera back out until spring gets here so I might be interested in the wide angle then. There's nothing much around here but dreary green, grey and brown colors.

Re: Picked Up a Z5 Last Week

The Z5 was the camera that got me into photography. I think the consensus of the day was the Z5 eeked all the available resolution from the lens, and the follow up Z6 was just a shot fired in the megapixel wars. I liked it at the time, but the colors never stacked up to what the A series produced and the noisy sensor steered me towards my first DSLR.

SR and the handgrip were probably my favorite parts of the Z5.
