Advice on buying used 24 70 f2.8 L USM

I am about to buy a used canon 24 70 f2.8 L USM. for approx $750 (there are some fungus patches so need to discuss the final price with the seller). I have never had an L lens before and was a bit awed of the image quality when I tested it. I wanted to have some advice from the other owners if they feel the the images are upto the standard of this lens or if I might not be getting a good piece. Apologies, these are some random test shots on my Canon 6D. Any advice much appreciated. Also would anyone have any idea of risks of going for this used 24 70 L USM model - Particularly I was reading some disturbing blogs where in the diaphragm collapses on this particular lens after some year's use. Again thanks for reading my post

I would be hesitant to get anything with any kind of fungus, unless the price was stupid cheap. And $750 is not stupid cheap.  (Fungus never sleeps!)

You can get the one from a camera dealer, with return privileges, and a warranty for that kind of money.

For example:

I have one of these, and it is indeed a really nice lens for the money. Tough as nails.

All the Best, Jeff

Fungus is not good unless you plan to spend the additional money to have the lens professionally cleaned.

"Lens fungus is a combination of dust and moisture that finds its way into the interior elements of a camera lens. ... It can look like small web-like spots or patches inside the lens. Left untreated, lens fungus can permanently decrease the performance of the lens and cause your images to look fuzzy or hazy."

Don't do it. That is not cheap for a lens with fungus. You are being ripped off

While fungus does not scare me that much, depending on how much there is, I would put a price of more like $350 to $400 USD on this lens with fungus.  I am assuming that it is the original version you are looking at.  The asking price is for a used one in good condition.

As for aperture blades falling apart, again not that concerned about this, but depending on your use.  I will say that I stopped using a 40 year old lens on my 8 to 10 fps bodies with automatic aperture, for sports, exactly because I could start to see wear on the aperture that was not there before these high speed cameras started entering the mainstream.  Instead I adapted it to a 10 fps body that had no automatic aperture.  So I was able to set the aperture manually once and it would never open and close while shooting a long burst.

You will have no control on how often the aperture on this lens opens and closes but you can avoid high shutter speed bursts at 10 fps, for instance.  This will greatly extend the life of any aperture.

Thank you to all the experts for your very valuable advice. It has expanded my knowledge immensely and has prevented me from investing in a potentially risky lens nevertheless how much the current image quality captivated me. I think I will now instead go for a new lens which is always a safer bet.
