Loving my new Nikon D3500
16

After many years using the Pentax DSLR system I’ve sold it all and moved to Nikon in November 2020. I tried a D300 out a last summer and enjoyed it so decided to take the plunge and have bought myself a D3500 and twin lens kit (AF-P 18-55 VR & AF-P 70-300 VR) from Currys for £599. I can find no one else in the UK offering that deal and it doesn’t appear on the Camera Price buster website either.

So far I’m impressed. I decided on the D3500 because I wanted a simple, lightweight, no frills camera and choose the twin lens kit because it was such good value. I also have a Sony RX100 that has all the bells and whistles I need and is light and small enough to accompany D3500 when required.

During these Covid times in the middle of winter I have fewer opportunities to test my new camera out. That said I walked around Bury St Edmunds last month and took photos of some of the many historic buildings which although not exciting allowed the D3500 & 18-55 to shine. I was astounded by the detail captured. Better even than the K-70 (the last Pentax I owned and also 24 Mp).

I look forward to spring and summer and hopefully allowed to roam more freely once again.

Congrats on your D3500,

It sure is light enough to carry around and is capable of taking great photos. Your deal included "70-300 VR" which alone costs over $300, here in US many bundles included standard "70-300" lens version non vr, like my did. Then again my only costed $399 plus tax.

Good luck shooting,

Paul

After a 25 years (kids) I decided to get back into photography - after a LOT of research I decided on the Nikon D3500. It came with the 18-55 and 70-200, which I've discovered is a very sharp lens!
I am very happy with the camera and have toyed with upgrading however I find the D3500 gives me everything I need for what I do. I see myself enjoying this camera for years to come.
I have since acquired the 70-300(vr) and a Tokina f2.8 11-16  lens both of which are very good.
Like you, I am under house arrest ( covid ) and yearn to get back out and shoot more images... would love a trip across the pond to visit other lands to boot!

D3500 is a very, very good camera. Without extra functionality, but with a very good matrix.

Glad you like yours. Ive had mine for about a year now, have not used it all that much, but like it a lot so far. It's like the D40 I had years ago, but way better.

I got the kit with the 18-55 and 70-300 non-VR for $499 I think? I have since added a 55-200 VR and the 35mm f1.8 prime. I highly recommend the last one.

Like my D40, it seems to make it easy to produce pleasing images. I like that.

Enjoy your new gear!

35 mm on the crop is a little less than 55 mm, a very convenient lens

Re: Loving my new Nikon D3500

Intriguing comment about more detail than the K70... I would have thought that there would be minimal if any difference and only by using better glass.

Do you shoot jpeg or RAW?

I have one remaining k3 and my son is sending me his D3500 as a back up for a couple of weddings I've got coming up. (Along with my D800)

I'm also interested to see what the advances in sensor, software and processor will make between the it and my k3 will be.(most notably high iso)

Obviously k3 is a higher end camera but IQ should be comparable from two similar sensors.

I'll report back.

Thanks, you had some nice vintage glass.  I am currently using both systems for different end uses.

Not really the same, but my d7500 seems to have more detail than my Pentax kp.  The k5iis and k3 didn't blur raws to reduce noise and were sharper at the pixel level.

Re: Loving my new Nikon D3500

I own a d3300 since 2014 it's working very perfectly. Upgraded my lens to 35 mm 1.8 G which is superior in low light conditions.

I have the same lens

I wish they still sold cameras as kits with f1.8 lenses

Still loving my D3500. So much that a week ago I bought a mint condition D7500 to keep it company.

Re: Loving my new Nikon D3500

You are fortunate that your kit came with the VR version of the 70-300 lens. As others have noted, here in the US the 2 lens kits generally have come with the non-VR version. It's fine for a kit lens for what it does, but for most people I think it's kind of useless. The VR that you have is much more usable and versatile. Either way, it's screaming good deal you found, and I'm glad to see you are enjoying it. Post some more pics.

It kills me they took away the accessory port from this series.
