R6 Set Opinion - 70-200

Hi,

right now im using an A7II with adapted Lenses. The third party Lens adaption was the worst thing i ever made so i will go with canon again and sell all the sony stuff.

Now, i really liked my 50mm on aps-c which will be about 85mm in ff.

As it will almost end in the same price, which set would you go for:

R6 + 70-200 f4 + 85mm f2

R6 + 70-200 f2.8

Canon Lenses in my Bag:

50mm f1.4

24-70mm f4

Laowa Macro

If it helps, I use a Canon EF 70-200 F4 L IS on an R6 and RP with great results. I also use a Tamron 100-400 for more reach.

R6 + Canon 70-200 f4 is L

R6 + Tamron 100-400

Good luck!

Re: R6 Set Opinion - 70-200

I have owned the EF 70-200's - the f/2.8 IS L, both version I and II, and the f/4.0 IS L (sort of version 2), plus the RF 70-200 f/2.8 and the RF 85mm f/2.0. FWIW, this is what I think.

If you want to save money, buy a good used EF 70-200 f/2.8 L II and the new RF 85mm f/2.0, so you can have both of the best options available. I sold my EF version II and bought the RF 70-200 f/2.8 and am tremendously happy with the RF version, because it has the same optical properties, same or better ruggedness and a big reduction in carry size and overall weight in my bag, but some people still prefer the internal focusing of version II and III lenses so much that they don't mind the extra size and weight of the EF's with about the same optical quality as has the RF lens. Of course you do need an EF to RF adapter, so keep that in mind. So a used EF f/2.8 is clearly the best deal for the money. The latest f/4.0 EF 70-200 lens is optically great, but an f/2.8 version is the same or a tiny bit better, with a stop advantage in low light, and is a better value in my opinion. As to the RF f/4.0 version, I'm sure it will be a great lens, but I think a used f/2.8 lens will be better (and cheaper) for most serious shooters, again if you don't mind the extra weight and size, plus who knows when this lens will finally be available.  If you also get the new RF 85 f/2.0 as well, you get a heck of a bargain portrait lens at another f/stop advantage over the f/2.8 zoom lenses, lighter weight and smaller size, with excellent modern optics and coatings and semi-macro thrown in for a big bonus. Altogether a great combination of quality and  capability at a decent price.

Of course, you decide what works best for you.

Thank you. Its a bit of a hard decision, especially because im not a professional photographer who earns money with it. Right now (next week) i would save almost 600€ on the RF f2.8 and i think i will go for it. After some months i will hopefully forget about the money and just enjoy it.

Everyone always says the EF is an alternative to the RF 70-200, this is one lens where I think the general consensus is wrong, I never liked any of the EF 70-200's I tried. I had the f/4 mk I version and was unimpressed. I also had the f/2.8 non IS and wasn't impressed either. Although if I had to pick I'd say the f/4 was slightly more to my liking.

The RF always looks good.

I don't think it is even close between the RF70-200f4 plus rf85f2 versus just the RF70-200f2.8. Other than maybe weight (if you carry only the f4) or having semi-Macro (50% 1:1) on the 85f2, the RF70-200f2.8 is a massively better choice in almost every situation. Why carry two lenses, and both with when to change them when one is better in almost every way?

Re: R6 Set Opinion - 70-200

Even if you sent it to Canon and they cleaned all of the dust out of the lens, how do you think it got in there in the first place? It's just going to happen again eventually. Meanwhile, that sort of thing has no effect on photos.
