x100s in 2021?

Considering picking one of these up cheap.

How does it hold up, specifically for AF? I only use single point AF and focus and recompose.

Would love any input!

I find the autofocus to be pretty slow tbh, and I wish it had classic chrome and across. having said that, I'm glad I have it for when I really wanna travel light and I'm sure it will be pretty cheap nowadays.

Getting it for $300 USD.

I also have a full xt20 kit, but thinking this as more of a take everywhere,do t care if it gets roughed up, leave in the car type camera.

You think the AF is bad for fairly stationary things? Don't mind if it's slow as long as it's accurate

oh I find it pretty accurate, more just slow yeah. In low light it misses focus and will rack through the focus range, stuff like that, but in good light it's generally pretty good and fairly snappy

I am still using it 7 year after purchase. You should not worry about AF for landscape or urban photography. An absolute gem of a camera that you can take along any time. You barely notice it hanging around your neck while  walking or biking.  Good luck with it. As for film simulations DxO Lab 3 does the job.

I had one. AF is good for good light situations and static subjects. It's AF could not keep up with moving object most of time.

If I remember correctly, one of the main drawbacks of the X100s is that you need to rely on the dials for f/numbers between each full stops. That means you can only access to full stop aperture value on the aperture ring and you cannot get to the next full aperture value when you are adjusting the in-between 1/3 values using the dial... That was a pain in the neck to me and that was one of the reasons I sold it. I mean I appreciate some camera can slow me down but not in this painful way. LOL. I think the problem was "fixed" in X100T. For that reason, if I were you, I will at least go with X100T. But the AF is still sluggish on X100T.

I have the X100T (in terms of AF and lens it is the same as the S) and the XT20 and use the same focusing technique as you do.

Sure the AF is slower than the XT20 but operationally the camera can sometimes be faster:

* The X100 can be programmed to switch on/off face detection with one click. By doing this you also switch metering mode with just one press (I have this assigned to the fn button). personally I find this super useful and super fast.

* The X100 has less focus points which means that you can adjust where you focus with less presses on the D-pad. In my case moving the focus point one third left or right of the frame is done with 2 presses on the D-pad. On the XT20 it requires 5 or 6 presses.

Compared to the XT20 the X100 feels like a tank (no plastic just metal). It also has a bigger EVF.

In all - even if the XT20 is faster and more modern I enjoy using my X100T more and operationally it is often quicker.

Pretty much what has been said.

The S is the 2nd iteration of this camera. The 1st did not have the X-trans sensor. As pointed out, the focus is slow. Usable but slow. Many people use this camera for street photography. Good enough. As an older body, some of the film simulations are absent. No Acros. The lens is the same 23mm f2 across the line until the improved V. Some say it is a little soft. Not great close up. Corners a little soft wide open. Good enough for me.

I like this camera. Small. Not in your pants pocket small. More like a jacket pocket small. Lite certainly. Love the B&W with the red filter. I like the images. Not a video camera. Did I mention this is frequently used for street? Video is HD and OK for short clips. Has dials and butttons to customize.

My rule is if the camera took good quality images six years ago, it will take good images now. An older sensor but still good. Not as many tricks as the V but it is an older camera. You pay more for new sensor and add ons. Great value for $300. Take the camera and run.

Don’t like the camera when you use it for a while? eBay or Craigslist it. You will get your entire money back. Maybe a few cents more.

Congradulations for a good buy. For some, this was the entry drug into Fujiland.

I would suggest you stump up a little more for the T. I cant name the specifics, but I remember there were a host of ergonomic and handling improvements beyond the AF speed increase.

IRC the T's EVF was improved to OLED and I think the OVF had dynamically updating frame lines.

The X100S was my first Fuji and is the camera that led me to all the others. Frankly, as I look back at old images from it, I prefer the overall look to many of my X100V images. Autofocus is fine for static subjects, travel, and family. Don’t hesitate.

Its a neat little camera that uses a different battery so another charger to carry around when you are on the road.

You have a 23,so know the FOV.ovf is just ok.

Its fun but nothing exceptional.I just sold mine after a year of ownership,I actually prefer the XM1 for a small convenient snapshotter.it has the 27 permanently attached.

Have fun with it.

Re: x100s in 2021?

Thanks for all the reply's, picked it up today. Around 10k shutter actuation's, in almost perfect shape 9/10!
Did a very brief shoot just to test the camera and I think I really like it. AF isn't that bad for my uses, though it does hunt a little in low light as mentioned.

Feels great in hand, feels well built.
ISO 6400 somehow looks better than on my XT20 probably due to sensor resolution.
My biggest complaint with it is that now I really want an X100V!
One question to previous owners of any of the x100 series, what is the week spot build wise? My gut tells me the OVF / EVF would have issues before anything else but maybe Im wrong.

Congrats. It's been a while so I don't remember the soft spot of the build. the X100s build was quite solid honestly. But dust in lens and VF is one of the complaints before. Sticky Apreture balde was an issue to some X100 series cameras including X100s before. I think it's no longer a problem to the recent models. Also, please think twice if you want to use soft release button. Some people damaged the shutter button because of that.. guess that was because some people exerted too much force when they screwed it in. The soft Botton won't stay even those with rubber band. And its is way too easy to turn on the camera in the bag accidentally ( and drain your battery) when you have a soft release installed. I personally don't recommend them.

Nah. I would only consider a camera that old if it autofocuses fast or has a really good manual focus experience. I used it in 2018 and it wasnt anything special.

I don't think sticky aperture blade issue made it to the X100S because it only affected the earlier X100 cameras. Serial numbers starting with 2 didn't have the problem nor did the black limited edition X100.

Could it be the issue with a stuck OVF/EVF curtain? I've experienced it once but bumped the camera against my palm to release it. Has never happened again.

Generally I find the X100 (T in my case) very well build. I bought it used in 2016 and it has travelled with me to numerous places - both tropical places and sub zero. It is quite beat up, has been covered with sand, sweat, sun oil, splashed with sea water etc but still works like a charm. I also still use the same battery that came with it originally.

I used that camera in 2015 to take street shots in New York and they came out just fine. Some I printed as large as 50x60cm and they are sharp in all the details. So I would not worry about the fact that the camera is a bit older when you can get one for a good price. Here is my flicky-album with those street photos. Most were taken with a Fuji X100S.

Welp, the camera I bought (which I didnt get to test fully due to dying battery) has an issue where the EVF curtain will stick every 4-5 times its engaged. Fixed just by re-engaging either with the eye sensor or the lever. It was cold out when this happened so lets hope its not that common.
I also mainly use the OVF so hopefully I can just use that and not have to worry about it...
Still a bit disappointing first entry into the X100 line.

What are you going to do with it? If your intended subject matter does not require lightning fast auto focus, I don't see any reason why not, if that's your budget.

I still have the original X100 and it is capable of some great pictures (not by me but by someone who really knows what they're doing! )

Re: x100s in 2021?

This camera is really a mixed bag.  The pictures from this camera are really beautiful.  It blows me away the softness and special sauce from this older sensor.  Often they look nicer than my X-T3 or X-H1 cameras and what they can produce.  I still have the X-100s, but the only reason I do is because my wife doesn't want me to sell it.  She somehow believes (he he), that it is her camera.  Other than this it would have gone years ago.

The autofocus is abysmal and forget trying to photograph anything moving on AFC.  Also - I wear glasses and the EVF and OVF are horrible.  The ones on my T3 and H1 are looking looking into a modern large, HD, tv.  The one on the 100s is like peering into a darkened porthole!

I'm glad photography has come a long way since 2012.
